How Hot Are You Running?
Just got my 88' 930 Cab. back from freshing. I took a trip up North, not far for me about 20-30 mile have to go though stop & go in town, then some open times. I do not have the #erd Temp. gauge, I noticed it was getting close to the red about 3/16th's off that red area. I talked to my Brother who has a 76' 930, said it will usually top out at a certain temp. Is that just how it is?

Stuart - Mine just stays in the middle, even in heavy traffic. Post up pics of your baby!

Looks like the site is still being upgraded. I will post ASAP. I may have to switch to a gauge with #'s.

Mine rarely gets past the lower block on the gauge. I have a large front cooler and no fender cooler. The front cooler is even poorly mounted with the back side very close to the body and front only getting air through two holes cut in the C2 bumper. I thought the gauge was broken, but the highest reading I've seen from my ECU data logging is 182°.

85C around town driving, 100c in heavy freeway driving. I try to get it above 100C now and then just to boil off moisture. Do what you can to keep the oil temp out of the red, and keep oil changed often if you can't.

My 79 never gets the needle past horizontal, and even that is rare. Usually 1/16" above the white line. Although, my rear bumper gets really hot if it creeps much past the white line (with heat shield installed). What does horizontal convert to in degrees, roughly?

If you crank your head around and look behind the bezel of the gage you can see the factory calibration numbers. They are as follows:
Bottom Line - 30*C Top of lower "Block" - 60*C Middle Line - 105*C (219*F) Lower Line of Red Block - 150*C Upper Line of Red "Block" - 170*C

The Hood is a little out of alignment as seen in pics. The antenna doesnt go up when I turn on the Radio. Will have to look at that. There may be a wire loose under dash that could be causing the higher gauge reading, this is what the prevous owner has said. Possibly a Ground wire. Any idea's?

I've got an '86, so I've retrofitted a 6" Spahl fan onto my wheel well oil cooler array.
Temperatures as example: Yesterday was 92o here in NH-MA and 85% humidity. Rush hour traffic on major hwys Rte 93 and Rte 95... cruising / traveling along between 30 to 75 MPH for this 47 miles part of my commute, rock solid at a hair below the middle mark. Off the hwy onto last 5 miles to home with stop lights, stop signs and such, it stuck onto the middle bar until into the garage.

A picture of the gauge would help.
But normally, up to 1/2 way the scale is normal, 2/3 up is hot; passing 2/3 is too hot. |

How Hot?
I found the numbers to the inside of the gauge. According to Bruce Anderson, the second white mark is apprx 200 (i think 196) and the third is approx 250 (i think again 246 but not exactly sure on the exact numbers, out of town and don't have the book handy).
The following is 80 - 90 degree weather: On the highway, I'll run right at the second white mark with A/C on and all windows up and S/R closed all day long. If I get into traffic on the highway, and get to close to cars (still running 70 - 80) the air flow gets disrupted, then it will go approx 1-3 mm past the second white mark. I get away from the cars, it will then drop back down to the second mark. If I turn A/C off, open windows and S/R in same conditions as above, the air flow gets disrupted over the car and the gauge will go 1-3 mm past white mark and just stay there. In city traffic (which I rarely get into) the gauge will just slowly start climbing, gone as high as 250 (third white mark) before I got out of traffic, but I am sure it would have just kept climbing if I would have stayed in the traffic. I recently added the large fan from Elephant Racing to my stock oil cooler in the fender, and all it really does it just prolong the temp from climbing. I have it set to come on approx 210-220. When it comes on, the gauge will just stay there for a while, then it will start slowly climbing. I have seen it go as far as just over level before I got out of traffic. I would have really thought the fan would have done more. All of this is with my stock 86 930, except all smog removed, no cat, euro muffler, O2 disconnected, and CO set to approx 2.5%.

Just as another point of reference with the temperatures in Hawaii, just like Bryan, my temp stays in the middle even at a stand still in traffic. The only time I have seen it get over the half way mark is during spirited driving on a hot day but usually this happens after a hard sprint and then getting caught in the notorious Honolulu traffic. Hope this helps BTW, Love the Cab...sweet! |

Did the markings change as the years progressed? I may be running hotter than I thought.
