pic of 930 oil separator

Anyone have a picture of the location for the oil separator that later model 930's came with? I want to add to my '79.

Thanks,
Skip

Ah, is that the port that has a cap over it next to the port that takes the oil line from the turbo (return)?

Ignorant question; what does that thing do? Why would you want to add the complication?

I'm hoping it would eliminate any chance of oil being sucked into the engine from out of the oil tank.

I have had a (Bond worthy) smoke screen problem which only happens on sharp right turns with heavy/full throttle. I can not replicate when I try, the frequency of the occurrence seems random and it only happens once in a while (not often at all). I found posts where similar symptoms were alleviated by adding the separator.

So is that a track-only issue?
Do you think it is caused from oil being sloshed/pulled from the tank by the G-force of the turn?
Have you tried lowering the oil level towards the bottom of the stick during track days? I have heard a few track junkies comment that they keep the oil at just above the "add" line on the stick due to excess growth in the tank under continual hard (track) driving conditions. I keep my oil level under 1/2 on the stick as well.

RL8- No, happens on the street. I usually keep the level at (or just below) 1/2 full. I think it happens less when there's less oil in the tank (near the fill line), but I'm pretty sure it still happens.

I haven't been driving the car much (which is changing), so I haven't been able to figure out exactly which conditions are needed for it to happen. But, when it does, it's a remarkable amount of smoke.

Brian, can you take some pics or explain what you did with the vent from the oil tank that the photo hides?

TIA buddy.

WYSIWYG
There is a filter attached to the oil tank vent as seen in the picture. That's it.
I've been running this setup for a few years now without any issues at all. As you can see from the picture there is not even any oil residue from fumes.

I have heard of the smoking issue before from track guys, there must be something to it if Porsche went to the trouble to add that gizmo in the schematic above. It is curious that it does not happen to everyone and it is sportatic. Somebody knows the answer to this, I hope they chime in.

RarlyL8,

What did you do with the line going from the oil tank to the bottom of the oil seperator? Cap it off? I wan't to say ther is one fitting coming off the oil tank filler and that would have to be split between the crankcase line and a small filter like you have to get rid off al the parts.

My engine is a '78 and did not come with an oil seperator. The filter you see on the oil tank replaces a hose that ran to the stock air cleaner assembly. If I were to make the mistake of over-filling the oil level the tank would belch oil into that filter and likely all over the engine bay.

Here is a picture of the stck assembly for a '78. You can see the black hose that goes to the oil tank on top of the oil filler neck and the braided hose that connects to the crank case on the bottom of the oil filler neck.

What year did they start using the oil seperator?
