Buying wheels - confused by off-set, spacers, etc...

I thought I was cool. Just going to buy some 9&11x17 for my '79 930 from either Kodiak, Fiske, CCW, etc. Then I started searching past posts and figured out I understand nothing... so, if anyone wants to help, I'd greatly appreciate it!!

Q1 - 11 vs. 11.5 - I'm guessing I'll run 315x35x17. Is one width wheel size better than another - or why choose one over the other? Will 11.5 cause any clearance issues?

Q2 - Hub width - does it vary among early & later 930's? Does it matter?

Q3 - Spacers - I believe pre-'80 had one size and post-'79 had another? True for front & back or just front? Does it matter?

Q4 - Spacers pt.II - Should I run with or without factory spacers? Or, is it just a personal preference based on aesthetics (i.e. deeper dish w/o spacers)?

Q5 - The numbers - Should I specify the back spacing/offset to the wheel company? Or trust they know what's needed to be known for my specific application? Are there generally accepted "best" offset/backspacing for a '79?

I hate being ignorant!

Thanks,
Skip

I would avoid spacers if possible. You may have to get open ended nuts or replace the studs with shorter ones though.

I choose 11.5 rear wheels for the 315 tires and they look just about perfect. You could even run a 12" wheel but that would be pushing the clearance a little.

I believe rear hub width is the same on all 930's and front hub width is the same for 79 and earlier with the 21mm spacer and 80 and later which doesn't use the spacer.

Since you have a 79, I'd run with the front spacers so your wheels will interchange with later brake setups and without the rear spacers since it's added weight you don't need if you have custom wheels.

I'd defer to the wheel company for what dimension they want. I listed my dimensions on the 930 wheel thread.

Thanks guys.

I'll probably go with 11.5 in the rear.

I like the idea of running the front spacer - in case I sell the wheels. But, I also like the deep dish look on the front. I may just flip a coin.

I got a quote from Fiske (way more than I want to spend) and they spec'd:

front - 9x17, +30MM offset
rear - 11x17, +17MM offset

Looks like David (125) has:

front - 9x17, +3MM offset - no spacer (up to '79)
..... -or- +24MM offset - with spacer (up to '79) or without ('80 and later)
rear - 11.5x17, +20MM offset - no spacer

Are these two configs close enough to be basically the same? Or, can 6MM make a difference? Does going from +24 to +30 move the wheel in or out?

David- your car looks awesome! Any chance I'll see it at TWS in the future?

Thanks!!

Going from +24 to +30 would bring the wheels in about 1/4". I have over a 1/2" clearance to the strut so +30 would probably be fine. It will also help with rubbing at full lock.

I'm signed up for the Sept 15th DE at TWS. I was at a TWS DE several months ago in an SCCA FE formula car, was that you in the silver 930?

Excellent. Thanks.

My wife and I will also be at TWS on the 15th - probably sharing our (beater) White SC. I'll definitely look you up and say hello. You're taking the 930, right?

Not sure if I'll be able to bring my 930 or not. Getting some work done and it needs (you guessed it) wheels & tires.

I think I've been to all the PCA events at TWS this year, so I was probably there - but not in my 930. I know the Silver 930 you're referencing - it's always there. He's got a modded 3.6 in it. SUPER nice guy!

Thanks again. I really appreciate the help.

I just put these on my 1986 930. 9's and 11's x 18. Fit great but if I remember right the off sets on mine came out the same, I want to say 19mm from and rear. I can double check if you like.

Those look great! Did you use the factory spacers? What are the offsets?

OK I pulled my file on the wheels and was way off on the off sets.

The off sets for both front and rear were 32mm according to my invoice. I questioned this when I got the invoice and they told me for my car that is how they come out. Anyway, I worked Alan Baylis at Wheel Enhancement. He is very good to work with and prices are also good (for Fikse). He can set you up with both Wheels and Tires if you like. I have NO relation to Alan or Wheel Enhancement, Just a happy customer.

The Tires I am running are Yokohama Advan Sports in 315/30 ZR 18 98Y rear and 235/40ZR 18 98Y.

NorCal930- I'd guess you're running spacers in the rear?

Thanks,

Skip,

Sorry I don't know more about this but I will have to ask my tire guy here in town that mounted them. As far as I know we just pulled the old Fuchs off and put these on. I am not sure if a spacer is in place already, as I did not purchase anything extra to mount these. Just bought the tires and wheels.
