Passenger's Side Muffler Outlet with Matching Driver's Side Waste Gate Dump

Finally got the time to fab this up. The muffler exits the passenger's side and the waste gate exits on the driver's side. Both short and sweet.
This is what it will look like from the rear. Very clean look!
I need to run it for a bit to be sure all is good. Should be ready for the masses in a couple of weeks.

Just curious, have you had a chance to dyno any of your set-ups? I was wondering if your dual out, or this set up would offer the best horse power gain? I will definately need something here in the not so distance future, and even though I love your Zork with wastegate setup (935 style). I just dont think it will be neighbor friendly (live on a street with a row of brownstones. I get the tunnel effect like no other)

I agree. I was holding out for the GT3 setup with twin pipes exiting in the center, but I'm thinking since my valence is already cut out for this style of setup (driver/passenger side exit), that maybe this is what I'll purchase.

Brian,

You hit this one out of the ballpark!

I wonder if it would eliminate some of the wastegate hissing sound having a wider pipe like your set up? That sound is not really pleasant to everybody. Kinda like an air compressor.

The first muffler I produced was the stock outlet single. I put it on the dyno and got into some bad heat soak due to the 100* temps we were seeing at that time (the basline Euro muffler dyno was done with temps in the 70's). Even with the intercooler too hot to touch the muffler gained a few HP over the stock Euro.

The real gains are not on the dyno. The engine breaths so much better. You can feel it on the butt dyno and experience the tach swinging much more freely in the higher RPMs. Then there is the sound. The turbo whizz and the cackle are addicting, the car becomes an entertainment center.

The above system is very simple and clean showing nothing but the tips. The 3" ID muffler has such a short distance to the outlet that it becomes little more than a glorified Zork tube. I plan to add sound deadening material to the muffler body before production to quiet it as much as possible.

An English major I ain't.
Point is that 12HP on the dyno isn't very impressive. The experience when driving is.

That is exactly what I need for my valence to look like, as my muffler is out the right side also. I was thinking "sawzall".

The only picture I have right now was taken after the system was tack welded.
The finished product will look just as nice as everyting else I have produced.
I'll post a picture when it's all done and ready for sale.

Damn that is a pretty exhaust. How did you make the transition on the waste gate dump? I wish you could make me one, but I do not have standard manifolds as I am running a t-4 turbo on my car and mine sits lower

I'm looking forward to seeing this completed. When this is released, I think I'll put my Fabspeed Zork with removable Borla XR-1 muffler attachment for sale in the Pelican classifieds. I'm accumulating way too much stuff that I'll never use.

Pretty? Not yet but it will be.
I hope to have it ready for production in a few weeks. There is still some sound level adjustments to be made and not a lot to work with.
The waste gate transitions from 1.5"ID to 3"ID at the tailpipe via a cone shaped pipe that is formed from stainess sheeting.
One great design bonus is that this exhaust system weighs next to nothing.

Sandman, do you notice much difference in performance between the Zork and the Borla?

Yes, when the zork is on, the car is more responsive and seems to spool quicker. I just can't live with the sound. The Borla sounds good and makes a great deal of sense for a daily driver, but it's just a tad mellow. I'm hoping that your muffler is a touch louder and raspier sounding. I need something in between the zork and the Borla.

I definitely don't want to be the doomsayer and downer of someone's idea...

But being so light and of apparently thinwall construction - will this hold up to the extreme - and I mean intense - glowing hot heat it will see during track use?

The simple design and layout is superb, very similar to what I had on before the Zork.

And not much quieter.

Just another thinng to think of, Brian

That's a fair question Craig.
My background is in R&D and quality systems in the chemical/automotive industry.
The muffler design constraints included exteme heat resistance and light weight. Where else do you find that combination? The aircraft industry. That is why 321 was chosen, that is what they use.
I adopted the materials and basic design parameters from M&K. Ben sent me samples early on that met all of my criteria.

Sandman, I'll set you up with one that has no sound deadening material.

My 14 years as an engineer in Boeing commercial airplanes (737 & 757) prompted the question.

As you could probably guess, failures in my field are shall we say rather permanent & extensive.

In case we missed it, what gauge 321 is the muffler can?

So long as it's quieter than a zork. The way you've described some of your other muffler products (muscle car like) is kind of what I'm looking for. As I said once before, the guy one street over from me, has one of the original B&B dual-out mufflers on his '84 (must have 100,000 miles on it) and it's the most glorious sound!!!!! Louder with more turbo noises than my Borla, but not as ugly sounding as the zork. I'm not looking for a straight pipe that exits on the passenger side.

Maybe this helps - the one I pictured above - essentially a Cherry Bomb 'muffler' - which has a perforated core with minimal damping - the difference between it and a Zork is:

Straight through cherry:
Less high frequency popping
Deeper sound - 'in a drum deeper bass' sound
Muffling of the turbo 'bizzzzzzzzzz' and whistle

Otherwise, pretty close in overall loudness
