Im doing my clutch in my80 930 and want to take every precaution not to pull the drivetrain a 2nd time because I missed something. Whats the best way to put the trans in gear with it out of the car? and does this take any effort? Im very experienced with volkswagen manuals, but I dont want to put to much effort and break something internally. The shift rod moves back and forth no problem, but i cant seem to get into gear. any tips

A pair of pliers - twist and push into gear. It should be easy.

may want to wrap something around the shaft so you don't booger it up with the pliers. ...if scratched / scored to far back may leak in seal and forward will have hard time getting coupler on it.
