New 930 owner, need advise about the gearbox.??
Hi Everyone
Just bought my first 83 930 So exited. There is one thing that i need you guys to help me decide. I has a 915 gearbox and the clutch is done. So do i keep the 915 and just fix the clutch or do i put a 4 speed box in it as i have to do the clutch anyway. Will the 915 be ok for a time??? Cheers Niklas ![]() |

Hi
According to what I have read on this site I would, as soon as money allows, put in a 4 speed gearbox. If you have a different setup ready in the 915, you will be fine for a while, but beware of it limitations. Grats on the car, sure looks great. Jesper |

HI,
i think you will be fine, if you leave the engine stock, also a billet side cover for the 915 will make it stronger to cope with the increased torque. |

You would want to add the Wevo retaining plate inside the tranny too.
http://www.wevo.com/Products/TransmissionProducts/WevoTransmissionProducts-Internal_XT032BearingRetainer.htm To answer your question, if you are not worried if you do break your 915 then you may as well use it. You stand less chance of breaking it if you don't pull away hard in 1st gear. ![]()

I would put in the 930 box and sell the 915 box...unless you are going to drive the car like an old lady ..... pulling hard in first and second is a kick in a 930, if you are not going to lean on it in all gears every so often then what is the point of having a 930 ? Otherwise get a"turbo look" and be done with it

Niklas .. I do not know how you intend to drive the car but I would like to think you are going to enjoy the 3.3 liter turbo motor.... the best running 3.3 liter turbo I ever owned was the 1983 911 turbo I had ...it was a great and I owned it for 17 years from new and miss that car to this day . You can try it... but I would say if you can find a fairly priced 930 box you would be better off. It reminds me of that old Fram commercial... you can pay me now or pay me later... there is a reason Porsche put the 930 box in the 911/930 turbo JMHO

thanks VZ935, I will be driven hard, So the best will probably be to take the 915 out before it blows up and i can still get some money for it.

Are you sure you have 915 gear box? take a picture and post. If you do it may not provide max strength for long term service.
