You'd think so. Yet industry indications are that this *is* the way the 911 is headed.
And with Porsche getting their racing nuts handed to them the past 2 years.......

As far as I am concerned, they can continue the 911 as the upper scale mid-engine car.

Porsche seems to think that the 911 has to be old school or nothing, and I just don't get this view.

First of all, the 993 featured all wheel drive. So that was a huge change.

Then all this heavy computer crap and PASM and Stability control and traction control and what-not, but it still is a 911.

So why not move the engine forward just a couple feet and call it a 911?

I mean, what does the 1973 Carrera RS have in common with a 997 turbo anyway? Not much.

Give me a mid engine car and call it a 911 and make it faster than a Corvette, PLEEEEAZE!!!

Why not revive the 916 and build it on the Cayman or Boxster chassis and kill a Vette? Porsche can hold their own in racing. just look at their history, your not gonna kill every year. Hey DDDD do you know any1 down at Lufttecnic that I can talk to about a fatter pressure plate?

I seen the Audis down at Sebring ,alls I could hear was Diff whine and the exhaust of the 3rd place gas car 10 seconds later. Silly ! I dont mean to throw a wrench in the works but what about Lambo and the prancing horse are they going to comply to green? I was just at Volkswagen school and they said in 3 yrs all states are going to be California compliant.

Screw California compliant! I could light my cigarettes from the flames my exhaust shoot. If i have to go through emissions; I just throw my 70$ catalitic converter on it and pull injector wires. As for the new "911s", they are a plasticy, electrical laiden shell of their origonal self. The new cars drive amazing but I dont see a future restorer sourcing a 20 year old PASM control module never mind coding it to the CAN data sys.

I had the pleasure of riding shotgun in a 505HP ZO6 recently. My God what a machine. Ungodly torque, gocart handling, same size as a 911, and 28+mpg on the highway. There is no way in hell I'd lay down $70K for a Cayman when you can have a ZO6 for the same money.
Porsche really needs to step it up.

I agree with Brian. Porsche has lost what they had. They now build fat, over complicated cars. Completely forgetting what Porsche stood for. Let Audi, BMW, and Mercedes fight over the luxury market. The Japanese will own all of them. If you want to go fast buy a Vette. a cam, headers and tune and you will walk all over anything Porsche offers. Too bad the interiors suck.

The "Blue Devil" or ZR1 is what I think they are calling it now. The last report I saw listed a 650HP supercharged ZO6 engine and a price tag of $125K. That will destroy a 997tt for less money.

The interior of the car I road in was very nice and was a few years old. Don't know how it will hold up to age but if that's the only gripe then I'd spend $5K for a custom interior and still be money ahead.

The seats in my dad's new ZO6 suck. No support whatsoever. Bet they get worse over time. The interior has that cheap plasticy feel that all GM products have. The steering wheel is the same one used in the Malibu. Sorry but Chevy dropped the ball on the interior. Otherwise the car is phenomenal in every other aspect. Brakes on par with or better than Porsche, suspension that is better, and an engine to die for. When the new car comes out with a nice interior, Porsche will again be on the outside looking in. I am pretty sure all of the mags will rave about the Vette. It will be faster, nicer, and cheaper

What about the GTO with the Vette motor. Crappy they have to take a car designed from down under because all the old designers at GM can't design anything but the Vette and Pickups.

GTO is neat, but way to heavy. Good foundation for a highway cruiser.
