Changes from '77-'78 (chasis, body, etc)
I'm familiar with the engine, brake and tail changes which took place between '77 & '78.
Can anyone tell me what (if any) changes took place in the unibodies? Are the '78's the exact same as the '77? Heavier? Different suspension pick-ups? Reinforced? etc? Just for kicks... Anyone know what (if any) the unibody/shell changes were for a '74 3.0 Carrera RS and a '75-77 930? Thanks, Skip

I think they are identical. There is a difference between the '77/'78 trailing arms due to the 917 brake mounts but the body mounts are the same. I don't think moving the engine further back for '78 did anything to the tub either - not certain about that.
There are some significant changes between the '74RS and the 930 though - suspension pickups, galvanized body, etc.

Thanks Tony.
I had heard that the 930's were similar/same to the 3.0 Carrera RS - that they were sort of an evolution of the concept. Specifically heard things like swing arms and pick-up points were the same between 930 (which one(s) I'm not sure) and the Carrera RS. - Skip

Pick-up points/body mounts for the trailing arms are different also in their location on the torsion tube.

ahh I wasn't too sure. So the '78 arm is different at both ends - I heard the 930 arms had different geometry than the 911 arms but didn't know they changed for '78 - other than the ear for the 917 brakes.

Yup..
That's when they changed.. 78. The late style arms were used from 78 all the way through 89 although the torsion tube is different for the 89 model to comensate for the G50 5spd. The mount on the torsion tube corrects for the geomentry of the bigger arms etc.. You can upgrade the earlier cars to the bigger/later control arms. It's merely having the correct tabs fabricated, located properly and welding them on the tube. There are a couple of good race shops around the country that understand the upgrade and can properly set-it up.

my 77 has the pop out quarter windows, those went away in 78 too. don't forget the 200 extra pounds that made its way into the car in 78.
