OBX 930 Header Question

Sorry if this has been discussed but I can't seem to find it.

My question is, where the two parts of the headers meet, is there suppose to be a clamp or something? Do you use RTV to seal them? Just seems strange to not use anything there?

Thanks in advance

Spence

Yes, you should of got a clamp with them.

Thanks BMAN, damn....I didn't get the clamp or any hardware gaskets etc...

Please excuse my newbieness but what sort of clamp would that be called so I can buy one?

BMAN 01-01-2008 05:57 PM

They call it T-Bolt clamp http://www.clampco.com/products/t-bolt-std.asp

thanks a lot mate!

Clamp that join? On B&B that join is left slip for expansion/contraction -

NathanUK 01-02-2008 12:45 AM

Take that clamp off. You are straining everything.

No clamp on mine; didn't run one with my B&Bs and don't run one with my OBXs. Never had a leak from this junction...

Same on GHLs.

You can force some RTV in the groove before pushing them together and bolting it up... won't hurt anything but the RTV may dry partially ruining any sealing qualities before you finish moving it around getting the header flanges onto the studs and around the oil line next to the #3 cylinder.
that can go quickly or be a pain in the... I have to have the B&B stainless braided 90degree oil line fitting loose while fitting the headers onto the exhaust studs to manuever things around, then position and tighten it as the headers are snugged up.

That B&B header joint there is around an inch deep and a snug fit. I've never heard mine leaking so it's not a problem.
Clamping sounds like a bad idea since the headers and the engine will expand different amounts and that joint lets the two sides move or slip away and back from each other a little during heat cycles without creating stress and eventually cracking.
Clamping it will squeeze the outer pipe down a little and probably make it harder to take apart and refit in the future.

This joint has to exapand. DO NOT CLAMP IT!!

NathanUK 01-02-2008 11:51 AM

The clamps that come with headers are for the heater pipes.

BMAN 01-02-2008 01:31 PM

Well looks like the clamp will be coming off in the spring :D

Hi,
I bought these used from a Pelicanite. They don't have an expansion joint at all, they are solid. I think I have some leaks inside the heater boxes.

+ 1 on no clamp, the collector under the turbo will crack into a million pieces

Porschephd 01-02-2008 05:56 PM

Keep in mind that the motor under boost can and will expand up to 5mm! What will happen to the pipes if solid or clamped. Something has to give!

Hi Stephen,
A question. Are all Headers for 930's, with the exception of mine, equipped with some type of expansion/slip joint?

Ohh, by the way, after I put the flow restrictor in the oil line, I quit smoking out the neighbors! DOH!

Only the ones that last. All the ones that I know of are slip fit or have an expansion joint in it to cope with the movement of an air cooled aluminum motor.

LOL, don't feel bad, I have shops all the time get mad at me when I tell them check to see if you put the ball in. I am always greeted with "well it worked fine with the other turbo" LOL, yea I know....check the ball. :D

spence, im thinking about trying the obx headers but i would like your feedback re: installation and performance. what kind of turbo ic etc are you running? thanks in advance , kevin

Be sure to inspect them carefully inside!
We found few nearly loose grinding pieces
in them. If those go in your turbo....
