91 965 Turbo Motor...what's it worth?
Hello all,
Unfortunately a 91 Turbo bit the dust last year (not mine but a friends). Car spun out and backed into a pole. Drivers side got all the damage with the main hit into the wheel, which broke the trailing arm and transmission case. The motor is good and we're trying to get a ball park on what it's worth. Details are ~58k miles, current owner had it for the past 12 years with easy driving (no track time at all), ran great before the mishap as it just had the valves adjusted (go figure). Motor would be complete (air box, intercooler, cis injection) but w/o exhaust and turbo. Any ball park on value? |

I guess we'll see what the market bares. Car is in the garage next week and I'll get started on the tear down...

Are you going to part out the whole car? If you are, I would be interested in the front and rear bumpers with the lights and all.

Ya...car will be parted out. Or donated for someones race car project. Chassis appears straight and it still has a clear title (only had liability). I'm into this to get some small bits and pieces for my car and helping him sell off the rest and be done with it.

I"m thinking $9-10k is the right number, call around to the dismantlers I'm sure they are getting 10-11 for them..

Please let me know if you decide to part the intercooler & related stuff (bloww-off assy., brackets, etc.) from the motor...
Hint: It might make more $$ with the engine & IC sold separately! Thanks,

I paid $7000 for a complete 89 engine package 80K miles. Engine is the same at the 91 but has the old style intercooler etc.

Boeing- is that the c-2 turbo you are getting the motor out of? How bad is the rest of the car?
What Im really trying to ask, whats left of the Tranny? Did the axle go through it or no?

91 Turbo Motor...
Jeff,
Please, please, please! If you are parting out this car, I need the tach you have. My 1991 Turbo came with a 993 tach and it has the OBC but no boost indication. I have no idea how much boost I am running. I can send you my tach, it is fine. Please PM me at: dad10@comcast.net or call me at 703-754-9507 Thanks, Mark

Jeff-
WAIT! If it still runs, do a compression test and hot leak down on it so you can include that information in the sale. Probably $1k + or more premium for a fully tested engine. I think it might be worth less ~ $6k to $7k w/o turbo and exhaust, but I'm not an expert on turbo engines. Doug

DW SD, I think he would have an easier time doing it out of the car, just hook 12 volts to the starter for the compression test. Since the motor is out it will be easier for him to reach everything.

Update
Thought I'd do a quick update here...
Motor is out and on the ground. We did a (cold) leak down on it to check it's health. Would have liked to have done a hot one but there was no chance to get it running in the car. Leakdown numbers were great. 1-2 pecent on most cylinders. What was interesting was cylinders 2 and 5 were very bad (ie...no readings???) so I thought not good! We pulled the valve cover and tapped the exhaust valves and wala...<5% leak down. After scratching our heads a little we figured as the engine must have been sitting with those valves open hence the readings. Anyway...nice to see the good numbers. I'll see if somebody local wants the motor first as I have know idea how to ship such a beast (open to suggestions/recommendations). Plus I'm running low on time...just not enough hours in the day at the moment. ![]() |
