Center Outlet Muffler for the 930

Finished this prototype up this evening.
It turned out better than I had hoped for! The flexibility is freakin' great. You can put the tip just where you want it.
The 180* bend will rotate axially while the tailpipe can pull in/out and rotate up and down. You can use it with or without a valance as it can tuck up to the muffler body or extend down if you have a valance.
I plan to use T-bar clamps to secure everything.
The spacer band clamps to both the muffler body and tailpipe to secure the entire unit from vibration.

And the best part? It works with the 934 W/G pipe.

Now you're talkin'. Zork without the noise.

equality72521 02-21-2008 06:35 PM

BTW, is that a Tial 46mm in the background?

cl8ton 02-21-2008 07:37 PM

Nice work! You will offer it in brushed SS? Also I see 1 maybe 2 axis of movement?
When and How much?

equality72521 02-21-2008 07:46 PM

Also, stupid geek note but you can place a degree symbol by pressing the alt key and typing 0176 (Alt+0176) or Alt+0 on a Mac

RarlyL8 02-21-2008 08:14 PM

The pipes can also move in and out as well as up and down. So there is a lot of adjustability.
I am really exited about this new design. It should end all the custom work for fitment with headers, aftermarket oil tanks and turbos. It will also allow the owner to put the tailpipes exactly where they want them to be.

The muffler above is a raw prototype. It is going to the polish shop next week and then to its new home in Chicago. All of my products are offered in satin or high gloss polish.

The price will be the same as the stock outlet RL.930.1 , this one will be P/N RL.930.C
You can check pricing on my website listed below. Polish is extra and listed as well.

Mark - I forgot the DOS function key strokes 20 years ago, ha!

dewolf 02-21-2008 08:54 PM

I'd love to see those coming out of the bumper on either side of the number plate.

RarlyL8 02-22-2008 09:46 AM

Anything is possible but I doubt too many folks will want to drill 3.5" holes in their bumpers.
I have actually thought about doing just that with my F/G bumper but I cannot bring myself to do something permanent due to all the different muffler configurations I work with.

930LDR 02-22-2008 10:19 AM

Brian -

Don't think that I could see it from your pictures but make sure you don't forget the O2 Bung!

Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Whoa Brian.. watch out there, you're getting a little riskay..

Just kidding.. nice work on that design.. think there will be any drop in hp or spool time from the back pressure? Still a short pipe.

Mark, thanks for the "geek" tip.. I forgot that one too!

RarlyL8 02-22-2008 01:18 PM

Back pressure? You can roll a tennis ball through that dude. This particular unit has sound deadening material in the expansion chamber so there will be no evacuation effect. Even so it should be very free flowing.

Didn't forget the O2 bung, that will be put in during final welding then it's off to the polish shop. I'm expecting the T-rod clamps any time.

Another noteworthy point is that the tailpipe can be angled towards the ground should you desire further sound deflection.

Mark - that is a 46mm wastegate but it is not a TiAL, rather a cheap Asian knock-off I bought to compare.

935TURBO 02-22-2008 04:31 PM

Hi Brian,

I did that one a few weeks ago...and I'm still waiting to hear the sound, untill I finish the fitting of the blown6 IC.......

I see. Just curious as I'll be in the market in the very near future.

RarlyL8 02-22-2008 06:05 PM

Yes Serge, I saw your muffler a few weeks back. It should be fairly quiet with that style muffler.
What will you use to support it?

Mark, M&K is a TiAL dealer and will give you a good price. I am approved as a dealer but cannot swing the buy-in price. Staying small and focused has its advantages and disadvantages ....

equality72521 02-22-2008 06:23 PM

Thanks, I'll give him a call.

935TURBO 02-23-2008 02:20 AM

Is that what you're talking about Brian....?

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/7...223008mem0.jpg

RarlyL8 02-23-2008 06:50 AM

Yep. Saw the band but didn't know how it connected. I have a similar muffler for another application and use the stock bracket for it. Yours is in a different position so I was curious.

935TURBO 02-23-2008 07:20 AM

Brian, the "assembly" is so strong that you could pull the car by the outlet....!!!

I had to modify the stock bracket a little bit...one more hole and some position adjustements......

Thanks for the pix. I get it now.

The muffler is nearly finished. Enough that you can see the final product.

Brian, as soon we"ll finish each other, we'll compare our sounds....Melody....!!!!.....:)

Looks good

Reaper930 02-27-2008 08:13 AM

Looks beautiful Brian, can't wait to get one of your pieces on my car!

RarlyL8 02-27-2008 09:35 AM

The center oultet muffler and a 934 W/G pipe would look pretty nice on your car.

fredmeister 02-27-2008 02:19 PM

Brian,
You have a nice looking system there. I had a few questions though:
What type of muffler are you using for this kit?
How is it going to be held to the muffler bracket on the engine?
Is there an O2 bung welded in between the muffler and the mounting flange?
Finally, this is all 321 stainless correct?

Thanks,
Fred

I can answer a few of these.

1st Its and M&K muffler
2nd yes there can be an o2 bung
3rd Yes all 321

RarlyL8 02-27-2008 03:43 PM

The entire assembly weighs less than 10 pounds so no bracket is needed. I am working on a simple way to use the stock bracket for those who have deleted the turbo bracket or just feel better having one.
The original prototype dual outlet muffler has been on my car for almost a year now with no bracket. It weighs 12 pounds.

Rory Mckenna 02-27-2008 07:04 PM

Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

equality72521 02-27-2008 07:07 PM

Erik, did you ever get a zork? I'd like to hear one personally before I consider buying one.

Rory Mckenna 02-27-2008 09:50 PM

I borrowed one and it's LOUD!... I haven't given up on it yet though as Ed Bighi and I talked in length about the factthat a k27 will change the tone due to the turbo impellers.. the stocker just sounds like .. well a 930 wit hno muffler... it's OK.. but for driving everyday it may start to bother you and or the coppers around here.. I haven't given up though.. I STILL want one.... I thikn Ed Bighi has the right idea.. i am going to see if i can work with him on getting one if not i'll have to fab one up myself to my sepc's....

Oh yeah .. I'll buy your wheels.....it'll free up some cash for you...:)

RarlyL8 02-28-2008 07:53 AM

Nomatter the turbo, the zork is loud. That is why the above muffler came to be.
I tell all the interested folks if Harley's don't bother you then a zork won't either.

930LDR 02-28-2008 09:31 AM

^^^^^ Exactly^^^^^^

I love my zork but I know I am going to get pinched for exceeding sound restrictions with the local clubs I run with at the track. Brian was good enough to work with me to develop the above solution. Because I had been running the 934 wastegate dump pipe with my zork and had a custom cut rear valence to accomodate the setup I really didn't want to have to swap all that out just to run at the track. This should really be the perfect solution for my situation.

Craig 930 RS 02-28-2008 10:34 AM

I'd be surprised if this muffler is much quieter than a zork -

I had a cherry style muffler which is very similar in principle to Brian's muff, and now a Zork -
The cherry I had juuust takes the edge off - but not much at all.

I'd guess my point is don't expect much difference.
Not starting a pissing match, trying to help.

The nice thing here is technically you DO have a muffler, one less technical reason for a ticket -

RarlyL8 02-28-2008 01:37 PM

Comparing the muffler body I use to a cherry bomb? I don't think I need your "help". Ha!
HUGE difference between my mufflers and the zork when it comes to sound level. I run this exact same muffler body in all the various configurations. Even the 965 style unit that exits the passenger's side is fairly quiet.
I'd say if you use a zork as a basline that my muffler cuts the noise level in half or more.

shaka 02-28-2008 09:18 PM

Brian,

So would you say that overall attitude or sound of this muffler is equal to the zork but at half the noise level? If it is just a tad bit softer than the original "neighbor hater" but retains the attitude, might be interested.

Anything will help your car. We could hear you loud and clear when you left Aloha Tower. The sound of you accelerating onto Nimitz was pure harmony.

Yup, wont deny that it is loud and you are right, the sound is so intoxicating. Shortly after the Aloha Tower, I picked up Brian's wastegate dumppipe and boy at full boost, it sounds like an F-15 on afterburners.

Although I love my zork, what I was thinking is if Brian's muffler is just like the zork with all the attitude, turbo-spooling, and raw sound but with a little, not much, lower noise level, it might be a good compromise.

WPOZZZ 02-28-2008 10:35 PM

I wanted a Zork, but didn't want to attract cops, esp on Kal Hwy late at night.

930LDR,

Do you have an azz shot of your car showing the Zork, WG pipe, modded Valence?

It's Friday, just looking for some car porn!

P-

RarlyL8 02-29-2008 06:43 AM

There are 2 options for the muffler.

The muffler pictured above has sound deadening material added and is about 1/2 as loud as a zork at the most.

The muffler is also offered with no sound deadening material. That version creates an expansion chamber that helps draw out the exhaust gases. It is raw and wild sounding, exactly like a zork but at about 1/3 less noise volume. This is the configuation I run on my personal car with dual outlets. It is about as loud as I deem acceptable for firing up at 6am. My brother describes it as "big block sound".
Cruising at highway speeds it is very quiet, on boost it is an animal!

AngM018 02-29-2008 09:37 AM

I wonder if you can still shoot flames with this setup...
