So whats the best RADAR DETECTOR???

I got a $206 speeding ticket today, so its probably wise for me to invest in one soon if I want to keep my license, this will be my first summer with 930 and I like my spirited drives in the mountains. Jamie

Passport 9500i is IMHO the best system out there. It is just about as sensitive as the Valentine w/o all the false alarms. Most of us travel the same routes often. With the 9500 you travel the route once, program out the false alarms with the GPS feature it memorizes the exact position and frequency and it doen't alarm next time. If the frequency or position is slightly diff. it knows and you get the warning you need. With the others you get false alarms, so you start to delay braking or worse ignore them and BAM yer' busted. You can also use the GPS to mark speed traps, red light cameras etc.

Sure the Valentine gives you the litlle arrows, but who cares where the signal is coming from if you don't even know it's real....when the 9500i goes off, hit the brakes..it's REAL! You also get very good warnings around corners and over hills.

No.... I don't work for Passport but I am a retired LEO and now I travel about 75 -100K miles a year on business at high speed and the Passport is close to 100% for radar. My business partner is a retired Trooper and also swears by and uses the 9500i. It saves us some very embarrassing moments.

Now for laser they are all 'iffy". They do alert sometimes but warning time is next to zero unless you happen to get some light bounced off another vehicle before they aim at yours. Once they hit you it's pretty tough. If they aim where their supposed to, it may never trigger the detector way up on your windshield. Luckily you can't use laser on the move, need a clear line of sight, it's more of a a pain for LEOs to use, and there are 10x more radar sets out there.

Read this, but NOW I'm sold on the Escort. I don't even have the unit that has the GPS but that WILL be my next unit. V1? Nah, maybe I go against the grain.......

Hello,
I have a Valentine 1. Couple of things that make it great to me.

1) The arrows, it really helps to know where the radar is coming from. Also, if it's a False alarm, it is "most" likely a stationary source and you can watch the arrows track it as you go by.
2) For a small fee you can get your V-1 updated every year or so, if new software comes out for it. You send it in, and they send it back QUICK. I've done this twice already.
3) Valentines have Classic good looks, a la Porsche! You can't tell a Ten or fifteen year Old V-1 from a brand new one! The only diff is the SW load, and that is rectified for about $50.

I can't stress how handy the arrows are. You hear a warning go off and you know where to look, you don't look like a Bobble-head trying to figure out:

Which way did he go! Which way did he go!

Laser, you are pretty much Frak'd no matter what you buy. Pull over when the buzzer sounds and get your wallet out.

Make sure your Detector is not run from Batteries. The tests I've seen show that they are pretty bad after just a few minutes of battery useage.

They both will give great coverage. The real diff. between these and the cheapo brands are that they see over hills and around corners by picking up bounced signals. When I first upgraded, I put my el-cheappo on the dash next to my 9500i and had my friend run radar while I approached. On a straight the el-cheappo was fine, but put a little bend or dip in the road and the el-cheappo was toast where the high end units gave plenty of warning.

Although I really prefer the 9500i, either one is a great unit. The basic difference is arrows vs. less false alarms. I think the V-1 guys love the arrows because they need visual confirmation that it's not a false alarm, where I travel the same route often and have programmed out 95% of the falsies so
I just stand on the brakes. The V-1 has the big clunky retro look if you want to pretend that you where going so fast you went back in time...(Back to the Future style) or maybe you want to break out yer' Members Only jacket and cruise in your 1987 930 pretending it' is 1987 and your 20 years old again...like I do. The 9500i is more compact on the windshield if you want to be less obvious but looks really weren't a consideration either way for me. I was offered a tryout from a friend who owns a car stereo shop and after my "unofficial and unsanctioned radar test" kept it.

Since then I have bought 2 for others as Christmas presents and now my wife wants one

The "Classic look" comment I made was somewhat tongue in cheek and somewhat not. The point I was trying to get across is that if you bought a new V1 when they came out in 1992 like I did, that you can still be using it today some 16 years later with the most current technology in the detector. Just upgrade it every couple years. i've done mine twice. Probably could use it again, this thread has reminded me that I should see what benefits I would get with a new upgrade. If you read some of these threads referenced from this one, you'll note a lot of folks have had a lot of different detectors. Some of these poor guys have had every detector I've ever heard of. Hmmm, why is that???

The kewl thing about the V1 is that it is the only product that has ever promised upgradeability and delivered on the promise. Everybody gets a computer and they are promised you can upgrade in the future. But they never work out that way.

With the V1 you don't buy into obsolescence. You run your Serial number ever couple of years and look at what the upgrade will do for you and decide if you want to upgrade now or wait for the next cycle.

The concept of keeping something and upgrading it every couple of years for performance shouldn't be a foreign concept to anyone here...

It's a good solid product that works well. If you have to have the newest bell or whistle or LED color, it may not be the best bet. If you enjoy always buying new Bells, New Whistles, and New LED colors, it may not be the best bet. It is kinda stodgy and dated looking, kinda like the car it is riding in !!

No, I see how the look could be good w/ our cars...I kind of like the retro look.

As far as getting obsolete, the 9500i has a mini usb port, so the rumor is you may soon be able to download upgrades or possibly gps coordinates of known speedtraps. This way you can get a warning just as if you "marked" in the location yourself as I now do. It works great for laser locations, POP radar spots, etc.

So far nothing concrete on future upgrades, but that port does open up a lot of possibilites, we'll see.

V1. I swear it has saved me time and again from $$$$$$$$$$$$$ in tix, insurance and probably having my licenense revoked. Thing is a miniature AWAC, and i do like the arrows.

Anyone know about 'Radar Jammers" like this, sold by one of the board members...

Also, laser is a killer to us as it does not spread out as radar does - it is much more lethal than instant on radar -

Nice scare tactics...I call BS on this. 15 tickets a day?? Let's hope that never becomes the average total. That's more like the 2 week total for your average patrol guy. That is a month total for a guy who actually looks for REAL criminals , instead of wasting time writing soccer moms. Even Troopers or Highway guys write way less than that.... that is 2 tickets an hour, no freakin' way. There may be a few losers running around who write 15 tickets a day...they're the same guys whose lockers are in the corner and eat by themselves. Reckless drivers, drunks, passing school buses, write them all. The problem is there are too many guys who don't know that warn and admonish IS also traffic enforcement. Nothing ticks me more than someone writing a guy/gal on the way home from work or off to little league 5 miles from their house for minor stuff. RANT OFF

But, no matter what the real average is, the laser issue is still a pain. I don't know about buying the Blinder, if they exaggerate so much in their opening line, how honest are they about their level of performance?? I might however consider adding the Escort ZR3 to my 9500i . The only thing that sux is that it can't be transferred (easily)from vehicle to vehicle. $400 for the 9500 and another 350 fro the ZR3 gets pricey to add to multiple vehicles. If anything, just the 930 will get the ZR3

Anyone have any experience with the anit-laser coating??? In theory it sounds plausible to diffuse the laser.
