CV boot explosion

Yet another reason why tie-wraps are for electrical purposes and NOT mechanical (except absolute last-resort emergencies)...

Just when I thought the worst was over (PO's stereo install wiring).

If installed properly ty wraps are more than suitable for holding cv boots. My guess is it wasnt a T&B ty wrap, it wasnt installed properly and lastly the stock boots pretty much suck in comparison to modern alternatives. Pro Formula Mazdas, F3 cars and many other open wheel formula cars use ty wraps to hold the cv boots on. A cv boot with no bellows is much better, you can get them with thicker walls, tighter seals and better rubber. Plus on that setup the boot is meant to be inside the flange which mounts to the output flange cv drive coupler/doughnut/race what have you.

Now you can pull them both out, clean, inspect repack and reseal!

And if you are feeling very adventurous you can swap out that metric hardware, you can drill and tap the holes or time sert the holes to recieve a 12pt. NAS bolt with countersunk washer, I forget the exact dimensions but the head is a 1/2 inch and the nut side is 3/8 inch. This is the setup that is used on Standard formula Mazdas with the Hewland MK 9 gearbox which is built up from a VW bus gearbox. Much better hardware.
