My new 930

Well guys, I'll be spending some time over on "this side" of the Pelican forums now. I picked up a new-to-me, completely unmolested, 87 930 last week. It has 57K miles. Its only mods are a Permatune ingition and a .8 bar w/g spring.

I had been looking for a few months and was fortunate to find a good one within driving distance. I feared that I'd have to get on a plane to find the right one.

Here she is:

It was a one-owner car for over 20 years and has changed hands through two others in the last year. This thing had a ton of money put into it in the last couple of years. The original owner put $14,000 into it less than 2 years / 2000 miles ago. A complete engine reseal (literally 20 line items on the receipt that are gaskets, o-rings, or seals), piston rings, new turbo, oil lines and return tubes. Obviously, the car had been sitting, developed some leaks, and the scene turned into a huge case of "while you're in there". Money must not have been a problem. I have receipts for new tires, A/C condensor and receiver/dryer, and battery too.

PPI revealed inoperable reverse lights, a turn signal bulb, a plugged windshield sprayer, and sunroof wind noise.

I have to say that I'm amazed at the difference between a 930 and my 85 Carrera that I've had for 5 years (and will soon be for sale ). This thing is a blast to drive and if I'm not carful, I'm going to have to see a plastic surgeon about this s--- eating grin on my face.

My first project will be using the alcohol trick to clean out one of the headlights. One is new and makes the other look terrible. Thanks to these boards for the DIY on headlight cleaning. Next, I need to sort out the sunroof. It doesn't leak, but there's the windnoise that the PPI revealed as well as an ameteurish attempt of replacing the velvet seal which looks like crap (probably related).

Here are the sisters in the garage. What a beautiful image....

You did very well. The car looks great. Before someone else ask do you mind telling us what it cost you?

Welcome again Todd. Great to see the pics. Sure looks clean!

What's funny is - you and me have pretty much the same story.

I too found my 39k Guards '87 (last fall) 15mi. up the road in the same condition. Black gut too but sport seats (schwing!). Completely stock (save for EBC / spring clutch / gutted cat). PO had dumped $13k of work into it in the last 2 years - a great way to buy one of these!

Go figure huh?

I've just gotten through a bunch of little 'make it mine' tweaks - bumper boobies came off @ midnight last night actually 8-).

Enjoy the doors off her! Good luck with the sale of the Targa.

Great find Todd. I saw that one for sale in Ohio as well. I'm pretty sure that car was for sale in Buffalo a couple of years ago and I passed on it as they were asked more than I was willing to fork out. I also didn't want a show room or garage queen as I would never want to drive it.

Great car. great find.

BMAN,

Sure, I might as well tell you as you'll all be reading it in next month's Excellence readers' sales reports.

I paid $33k. Not the lowest price for a 930 for sure, but I think it's a pretty good deal for one with this condition and service history.

Mark,

Not the car I bought, but I looked at that very car you refer to - it's an '86. It's up in central Ohio and spent much of it's life in Buffalo. Great, unmolested car as well. I was seriously interested but it needed a few maintenance items and the seller and I couldn't connect on a price.

Todd

That car looks awesome and vaguely familiar, was it advertised online?

You should look into getting your fuchs refinished, the centers seem to have lost their luster, but besides that it looks like an A+ car, and in one of the best colors too

Yep. It was on Autotrader. You might have seen it there.

+1 on the Fuchs. It's got new tires now, but as soon I burn through these, they'll be off for a refinish...

Wow, that was a good deal IMO! Great color too.... I love the red. I assume it's original paint? How clean is the underchassis? Nice that someone put the money into it so you didn't have to.

I'm just up the road near Akron.

Great find! My garage looks kind of like that as I have a red turbo and a white turbo side by side.

Maxx1,

Thanks for the kind words. Pretty much original paint. The driver's fender was resprayed by the PO due to being keyed. Well done, blended well. They shot the front bumper too.

Looks great underneath. No winters in the past so there's just the usual 20+ years of oxidation here and there.

Where near Akron? I grew up in Hudson.

Todd

Great looking car!

What do you mean with "the usual oxidation here and there"?

We should hook up after I get the engine back in the car this month and compare notes.

Todd, I think your car came from Centerville, Ohio. I saw it in a service garage a couple of weeks ago and it is beautiful. The previous owner wanted to make sure it was going to be trouble free for the next owner (you). But by the way, did you have a relay go out right after you took delivery? If so I'm sure the p.o. felt terrible about it but it and it was a total fluke. Enjoy your car and I hope to see you and it at Porsches-2-Oxford on July 26.
Cheers

Surface rust/discoloration on the exhaust, etc.
