CA emissions question

How difficult is it to pass CA emissions with a 1984 Turbo with motec and evo cams and other internals.

1984 is a Euro. Is that a red flag in CA?

Have someone assess the emissions out the tailpipe.
To smog legitimately, you will need to go to the CA Smog referee. I would do this only after you know it will meet the requirements. It will likely need a check engine light, too and all of the smog equipment, PCV, proper airbox etc.

You can email MikeZ on this board. He is an expert on California emissions and might offer some good advice.
You might be able to locate someone who would help you find alternate methods, too.
All in all, a dicey and pricey proposition at best.

I have an '85 930 which is also a "grey market" or ROW. Never really had a problem passing with the cat attached. Almost passed without a cat since my car runs fairly clean (just B&B muffler - external)...i had to try it once I didn't pass that occasion because my CO or O2 levels (can't remember which) did NOT decrease as they ran the car and tested at determined RPM's. The cat burns the unwanted emissions as it heats up.

Most smog techs look for obvious mods. One shop had 4 mechanics looking under the car and they deduced the heat exchangers were the cats...If it looks stock then you shouldn't have any issues with the visuals. Check my sig for internal mods.

One other thing i thought was strange, I had to replace my original gas cap because they said it wasn't holding pressure.

I'm sure others that have gone thru the CA emissions will report something similar.

California Emission is pretty damn funny. We (930 owners) have an advantage and in some instances a dis-advantage. Advantage: no computer diagnostics plug in-ins. Dis-advantage: young smog guys don't know what the heck they are looking at. They just go by the book. Case in point: I took my 77 930 cabo to a smog guy and he was asking all kinds of questions... where's this? where's that? He actually asked me where my check engine light was? HELLO? Ironically, I had removed a toggle switch on the dash and replaced it with a shinny black plug (kind of a button) I pointed to it and said there it is... he bought it and passed the car. Too *****in funny.

Anyway, talk to a local wrench... he can get it smogged for a relatively inexpensive price. Not that anyone of us condone these practices, they are available to stand up Porsche owners like ourselves.

Good luck.
