Popping Out of First

Uh Ohh... so after I got the car started and the timing set at 4K RPM I wanted to take it for it's ring seating ride. Could not get out of the neighborhood. First gear keeps popping out. Please someone tell me this is a clutch adjusting issue... PLEASE!!!
Reverse, 2nd and 3rd all stay firmly engaged.
1st pops out pretty violently and you cannot "hold it" in gear. I adjusted the shift lever thinking that I was not getting enough throw to engage first but that did not appear to make a difference. Clutch pedal is softer then before (could be new pressure plate) and the pickup is a little weird so I figure that might need adjusting, but coudl this cause first gear to disengage???
Here are some pics before I buttoned up the tranny. I think I got everything right but then again...

Holy cr@p... I think I put first "fixed" on upside down. Here is a pic during teardown. Can anyone else find a pic to verify the direction of the little flat surface that protrudes from the gear. Maybe during your own teardown or if you know of a post that shows the pics???

I love talking to myself... but for the sake of the future searchers, here is the definitive answer found in an Imagine Auto blog on the web (I want to give them full credit for the instruction)...
"Now slip second and first gear on there. Make sure that the sleeve is going the right way, remember the teeth. Also look at the first gear. The one that is stationary. Recall I said some things have to go a certain way. This is one of them. Forget this and you will have a pop out issue with first for a whole new reason. Notice the edge on the gear going to the inside? This is to allow the operation sleeve to fit over the mass with full connection and not run into the hear behind it."

I guess you figured it, but here's a pic of mine....

Damn dude, I sure hope it's not what you suspect. Sounds like you and I have the same kind of luck. You could throw me in a barrel of titties and I'd come out sucking my own d1(k.

That is pretty funny. Thanks for the laugh. I thought you got yours running though???

equality72521 07-19-2008 06:47 PM

I did, but that doesn't mean I didn't have my share of "issues".

Guess I am the only moron to actually post their mishaps :)

So did your roller bearing rub on the teeth of the fixed gear too?

Not sure what that means??? But the clearances are backwards which actually should give more clearance for that bearing??? I think that was the rationale for how I ended up installing it backwards anyway. Stupid logic... I should have known better after working on German cars for the last 15 years.
