No Start

Dang it... the bad girl just won't start. Have fuel going to the injectors, checked that. Have spark going to the plugs, checked that. Even moved the dizzy one tooth thinking that might be the problem. Now I am lost. Any ideas???
After cranking it for about 30 seconds for the umpteenth time I got a pop and a poot... but it is not even pretending to want to catch.
I have had the IC on and off about 10 times so far checking various things... wow, this sucks. I even verified the plug wires. Jeez, this was supposed to be the easy part. Just wait till I tell you about the dumba$$ oil leaks later.

Any thoughts are more then welcome as I am now just sitting here searching on no start topics...

Did you fix any vacuum leaks while it was out? I did and my mixture was so far off after fixing them that it would not start. Once I adjusted the mixture and idle it started running and now runs pretty good. Just need to do some final tweaking.

So how exactly did you adjust the mixture without having the engine running? I am not sure I understand how to do that???

And how did you realize that was the problem? I am sure I fixed some leaks as I replaced all the intake gaskets and such.

You sound unsure of distributer position. Check timing with timing light while someone else cranks. It won't be the same as static setting so just get it close (near TDC) then reset it after it's running.

Since you have fuel and spark, but won't catch, is it flooded for some reason?

Pull fuel pump relay and continue to crank, crack throttle a little.

Jim, just did that and now I can get a pretty consistent pop out of the wastegate for each 10 second starter run. Hmm... will the timing light fire with the engine not running? That is a grand idea if it will work. I will at least give it a shot since I don't have any better ideas and I can also convince my wife she won't get dirty jsut turning the key

Okay... number one fires when the TDC matches up with the fan housing. Only thing I can think of now is that it is firing on the wrong TDC. I guess I will pull the dizzy, rotate the engine 360 degrees and try again. Spark, fuel and air... got all three so I must have installed the dizzy backwards right???

It started!!! Dizzy was 180 out... ugh. Running like crap but will idle and rev. Oil pressure is good.
Gonna set the idle timing and then do some searches on setting the mixture. Wow... can't believe how cool she sounds again!!! Oil smoke was prevalent but I am assuming that is till the new rings have a chance to seat.
Wow, that felt good. Now just to smooth out the running.
Thanks to everyone for the recommendations on checks. The timing light idea gave me the confidence to rotate the dizzy as I was seeing #1 firing at the right spot. THANKS JIM!!!

Pointless now that you figured it out but what I did was assume I was very rich and with the engine off I dialed it lean a 1/4 turn at a time and then tried to start it. Each quarter turn got it closer to starting until it finally did. Then I fine tuned it from there.

DSP, should be lots of threads showing the simple mixture adjustment on the airbox (3mm alen key on spring loaded plunger) Push plunger and rotate until you feel it engage, though while the car is running you will likely upset the mixture a little because you end up pushing the meetering door with the plunger. I no longer remember which is lean/rich - CW or CCW. Should be looking at some diagnostic device, O2 gauge unless someone has a alternate way to determine mixture.
