Honestly, I have been nervous lately about taking a 30 year old car beyond a certain speed. Just me, but I am glad my gearing ends at 156 because it kind of removes temptation. Plus the acceleration at lower speeds is great.

I don't have any real incentive to race a Z06, for instance, because he would still have about two gears left at 150.

Haven't received a ticket in the 930 yet....however I pulled over after passing a county Mountie at 130 & climbing on my Ducati 888. I only pulled over because I was entering population & wasn't sure if I could get home before they headed me off at the pass via radio. I was on a single destination road with no side roads to escape through.
All the fine officer said when he approached was "you know I couldn't have caught you right?" To which I responded "yes I know" To which he responded "If I ever see you doing that again, your ass is grass....now get out of my sight".

Somehow I don't think I will get that luck again.

Suffice it to say, these cars are fast. But I think you are correct about 30 year old cars/technology. You really have to have a highly modified 930 to hit some of the speeds mentioned in this thread. And its not limited to HP either. With the aero package (or lack thereof) of an early turbo car, its tough hitting 150+ mph. And then you better have the suspension and tires in good shape.

If you believe the speedo, I hit 160 on the back straight at Road Atlanta. Thats with 525hp, 4sp (with short gears) and a 964 aero package at red line.

The best part of that run was the ability to bring the car down to a good entry speed to turn 10A, faster than anyone around me. Big reds rock....

Big speed on the straights with big brakes allows one to get lazier in the turns Cornering speeds on smaller displacement and n/a cars are usually faster than the big boys

Unless you're driving a 4sp, then you learn how to carry speed everywhere (or get your ass handed to you by that pesky boxter).

Some crappy car vids of some high speed runs from last year, not 930's I'm afraid, i put a hole in a piston in the morning and ended up as a passenger for the rest of the day. You can get some idea of the buffeting at this speed, and the wind noise increase as it starts seeping through the door seals.

This one I'm in a uber modified 993tt belonging to TB993tt, RS tuning monster, this run is over 190mph GPS verified, speedo is off the clock. I'm reading his intake air temps, his car has a Secan intercooler and it held 20-degrees above ambient flat out LINK

This one is in Martyn's 993tt, also RS Tuning but not quite as extreme, his sunroof literally blew out of the car on a previous meeting so he was staying under 190mph, this one is also secan cooled. We're doing a rolling drag race with Toby's car in the above link
LINK

This one is a bit closer to the 930, JamesE's 600bhp 964. Judd (engine dyno) tuned monster. We didn't confirm the speed on this run but a subsequent run was 194mph confirmed and it will go quite a bit quicker, he was finding his feet so to speak. Apart from the noise it felt stable enough, still damn scary though when you're not behind the wheel
LINK

Once i get mine properly tuned and I'm happy to hold it at WOT I'll get something up. Do any of you guys have some in-car high speed runs?

I saw 192 on my digital speedo, where the analog was buried at 180 in my car
'91 turbo, 60-1 Hifi BB turbo, B&B headers & custom Borla exhaust, 1.15 bar, 275/35 tires, 2am, long flat upper deck with no other cars/people/animals to interfere. 387/423tq at the wheels.

Still, I won't do that again...that was 10+ years ago.

Not exactly on topic, but my observation of the Porsche's speedo error was somewhat surprising.

This photo was taken recently on a trip I made from Denver to San Fran in a bone stock 993, except the exhaust. Tire sizes are stock... no changes to the drivetrain. This was on US-50 in Nevada (known as the "loneliest highway in America").

The point was to take the picture showing both the speedo and the GPS, to illustrate the error. Unfortunately, the GPS didn't show in the pics... but it was reading 164. Car was rock solid at that speed.

Of course it wasn't me driving my 930 very early one morning at ~160 (speedo error factor unknown) on an almost empty freeway because I would not do such an outlaw thing, but if it were I'm sure that I'd be telling you how stable and balanced she was before traffic dictated a significant reduction in velocity.

I don't know what top speed we ended up getting to at the Vegas Speedway in the race turbo, but surely it was 170+. Me thinks you can almost feel the speed nicely in this vid: YouTube - pdqcarrera's Channel

I just watched your video and couldn't help wondering what the clear tubing clamped to the right side of the roll cage is for?
It looks like some motor oil and air blowing through it at times and I've never seen that inside a car before...
Is it the case oil scavange line with a visable section going forward to a front mounted oil tank?

I forgot about this thread, i may as well stick my data up here. The stock speedo with stock wheels is way off, and i mean WAY off! I was seeing as much as 13% difference, 150mph on the speedo was actually 128mph on the AX22 and GPS. The stock wheels and stock 4 speed gearing nets a top speed of around 187mph at 7000rpm, which is exactly what i found

I took a vid of my first run above 180mph, i will get more next time out, this is the only one i have at the moment VIDEO OF 182MPH RUN

I now have Ruf wheels with over sized 285/40/17 rear tyres, and the speedo is almost spot on, it still reads over, but it's now about 2MPH out at 150mph. The stock 4 speed is now good for 205mph at 7000rpm. I haven't had the chance to do a high speed pull with the new wheels, not sure i'll get the chance before i put the 5 speed box in, will report back when i have more to tell

Ross, is that a clear line to verify oil is flowing? Never seen that before.

I'm not sure what my top speed is on the track, as I have no GPS or data aquisition system. Running 18 tires also messes with the gearing as well. I'd have to guess about 150 on the back straight of VIR, but my friends have said a little bit faster when running together.

I 've had the needle buried at 150mph on an early Sunday morning, police escorted highway cruise, that was part of a major charity fund raiser. There were about 22 cars in the group. There's nothing like having an unmarked Supercharged Mustang GT up front with sirens & lights full blast, tearing across 2 counties. People would pull to the slow lane and the officer would just rip past them, and then a group of High performance sports cars, exotics, and a Rolls Royce Phantom, looking like we were chasing HIM for speeding, followed in the rear by a fully marked unit, with lights and all going. That was awesome

That same charity is doing it again soon....I don't want to mention the charity, or when it will take place, so that no one gets in any trouble. Officially we got up to a brisk 75mph

Nice! Only had mine up to 145, I mean 70 on a public highway. Too afraid of law enforcement to go any faster. there is some kind of super speeder law going into effect Jan. 1st that may put an end to any fast speeds around Atlanta.
Looking forward to road Atlanta in the spring, maybe try there!

Kris, what size tyres do you have on the back? And what is your rev limit set at?

I just got the 965 so no real speed runs yet but FYI on modern aero...my 996 at high speed is down right nasty. Front end starts floating all over the place especially with any cross wind. That is why the 996 cup cars have the air outlet in the top of the front bumper cover.
