Fabspeed muffler extension discolored

I recently installed a new single outlet stainless steel Fabspeed muffler system on my 1986 930. I'd like to know if the discoloration of the outlet pipes after the muffler extending to the tip should have discolored as they haven (see pix). The muffler remains shiny and bright but the stainless steel extensions have dramatically discolored - the stainless has discolored to almost a "rusty" look. I have contacted the distributor and they have indicated that this is "normal". Any thoughts??
Thanks, Gooshhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1220287373.jpg

Perfectly normal.

Plished stainless will discolor with heat; the rate and darkness of the bronze being directly proportional to time and temperature.

Here are some pictures of newly built exhaust systems, one brushed and one buffed. The last picture is how my prototype brushed system looked after a year.

But why did the tailpipe discolour and not the actual muffler?

The tailpipe is just an unshielded tube of metal so it sees all of the heat. My muffler bodies packed with sound deadening material discolor at a much slower rate due to the insulating effect. The neck of the muffler, right off the turbo, turns a deep bronse/brown fairly quickly.

They polish back up if it bothers you. I just used some of those abrasive sticks on a bench grinder fitted with a couple cloth polishing wheels and brought it back to it's original glory. It could also be that the pipe is not made of the same quality or stainless steel compound that the rest of the exhaust is....so it colors more quickly. Since is comes off with just the unscrewing of a band clamp, I've polished mine a number of times...but only down to where it shows. You can do the polishing in about 10 minutes with the wheel and the white and red abrasive sticks.

Hmmm, I've always liked the way SS develops a Patina. It kinda looks like Titanium to me when it gets "straw colored". When I look at a pipe set like that, it's obvious that it's SS. The Fabspeed is so pretty though, I can understand why you "wish" it would stay like that.

His is definitely more than just a discolor - it certainly looks to be more of a differential between the two than I have seen -

Like Chuck said you can re-polish it back to where it was.

My educated ;) guess is a difference in alloy's in the stainless as to why such a huge difference. probably has allot to do with where the raw materials were sourced and if from 2 different mills or different specs(I tend to think is the case) the tail pipe/tube is probably ordered and then polished where as the can of the muffler probably comes #7 finish and then after welding that assembly is probably electro polished which will slow the coloring process as is closes the pours of the metal chemically

The tips of my B&B exhaust were almost a gold color when I picked up my car. I used some Flitz metal polish on them and the look great again. I have to polish them about every third wash depending on how much rain I drive in.

My unknown SS muffler is very dark.

Thanks all for the feedback - my extensions discolored within 3 or 4 days of installation - I had assumed that the stainless steel finish would retain its original luster for quite some time. I tend to agree with mb911 that the two types of stainless steel are different grades of metal and/or finished differently. I am disappointed that Fabspeed did not divulge the potential for discoloration prior to my purchase. The sound is great ... the look is bleak!
Thanks again!!
