Turbo oil sump question
 
First post! Thanks to everyone for their input in this forum... it has helped me accomplish numerous projects on my 1988 930... air injection removal, valve adjustment, A/C removal... looking forward to many more projects as I slowly slide down the slippery slope!

Currently I am repairing a leaky oil supply line to the turbo. While I was determining how to get the line out from under the intake, I noticed that the turbo oil drain line to the sump has been crushed. The only cause I can see is contact from the stock exhaust. After searching this forum, I found a couple other photos of stock sumps that appear to have a similar issue. Are these oil lines deformed on purpose to provide extra clearance with the stock exhaust? That seems odd to me. It appears to be a severe restriction to oil flow through the turbo.

If the line needs to be replaced, does it make sense to cut the damaged portion of the line out and replace with a braided line?

I have mine apart at present and it has exactly the same dent as yours, so don't panic!

I gotta say, Negative Ghostrider. Looks more like a dent from the car backing into something. IIRC, mine doesn't have it.

Doesn't look stock. Looks like a dent from 'outside sources' like reversing into/over something.

It would have some effect on oil flow too. Replace it with something better.

Strange that they are in same location, although your dent does look larger than mine.:(
There are no signs of mine being accident damage so I assumed it is meant to be there.
Obviously my engine is in pieces at present so I'm not sure how the exhaust system runs in the vicinity of this drain pipe, but the dent in my pipe doesn't look like accident damage and there are no marks anywhere on the exhaust pipe in this area which might have caused it.
Perhaps we should poll all Pelicans to see if there are more than two dents out there. ;)

Just curious, has anyone tried to use the factory tank with aftermarket headers? Is there just too much interference? I've got the small B&B tank on mine. But the factory tank has a vent and a filter or at least a way to drain it during oil changes.

It depends on the header system. Some have different configurations that will not allow the tank to be used. I could not use them on mine (GSF) and I would imagine it is that way for most of them. I agree, it would be better to use the factory for numerous reasons but... oh well

Yeah...I had B&Bs, and am now running OBX...both came with the small tank. Maybe for grins I'll bust out the factory tank and see just how far off it is. Holcombe (Mode) makes a small tank that at least has a vent/overflow. It's intended to drain into the passenger side chain cover.

Strangely enough mine has the same dent. Since I noticed it I am not driving . Waiting for replacement to arrive .
I think oil flow restriction will affect performance and longevity of an engine eventually, so why test the limits this way.

What is the reason for doing this? The oil scavenge pump sucks it out of tank!!

My oil scavenge pump has been lagging behind the oil coming from my turbo. I am leaning towards that as the cause for my turbo seal failure.

I added this line as an additional gravity drain in case my scavenge does not keep up. With the vent gone from the original tank it changes the system slightly and I have been unable to pinpoint the problem. I rebuilt my scavenge (seals only) which did not fix the problem. If I had a good "donor" pump I could tell for sure, but its not that easy to find meaning borrow. This should help for that additional oil that has no home except out my exhaust. Not an option!!

This is just a safety precaution.

Could the damaged section of hard pipe be cut out and replaced with a braided line? I'd like to eliminate the possibility of any future dents. :)

I'm wondering if the dent in mine is what caused the leak in my turbo oil supply line....

I'd say if you can weld in a new section of pipe youself to save money or find a used one, you would be better off. Just my .02
