RUF 5 speed for sale in classifieds

Ruf 5 speed for sale in classifieds for 930 turbo application. Thought I would share as this is a direct bolt in for early turbo cars.

$11,500! Ouch!

How do parts availabilty and costs compare to a G50? Any savings vs a G50 conversion?

Does anyone have a gearing chart for the RUF vs 930 4spd and 5spd?

talk about inflation. About 10 years ago I saw several of them used in the 6-8 range.

I have a RUF short bell housing one in a 1977 930. No chart, but I can tell you the speed in each gear in mine @ 7000 rpm. 1st 50 mph, 2nd 80, 3rd 120, 4th 155, 5th 185 ( est). If it is a short BH one for sale it is probably not such a high price. I spoke to a trans builder when I needed just a standard pre 1978 4spd one for a race car and they wanted a 2K premium even for the standard SWB early 4spd. Seems some racers need/want these early 4speeds to use in high HP non turbo chassis cars ( RSR types etc ). The SWB RUF 930 5spd is the ultimate to keep it "vintage eligible" especially if you are winning races.

This is a good point- unless for a restoration garage queen, this trans is not a viable solution (only my opinion) for someone intending to use it as it was origonally intended.
I can just imagine someone trying to get a set of synchros for this and finding out they are no more

my $0.02

Check Patrick Motorsports, Jerry Woods, Bruce Canepa and many others for trans rebuild services. These transmissions were/are used in many race cars still today . Rebuilds are part of racing so there are rebuild services/ parts out there.

Stephen at Imagine rebuilt mine, synchros, bands, bearings, etc are available. If you need new input or output shafts, then you may have a problem sourcing parts.

G 50 is a great trans, however may not work for certain applications. (1) will not fit into the 76 or 77 turbo chassis unless it can be re machined to the short bell housing configuration. I know the 78 and later trans can be done( approx $1k if you take it apart or $2.4 if sent in complete, plus extra $$$$ for 935 type Comp clutch assy and throw out bearing ). 2. Not eligible to use in vintage race cars.

From what I have heard the G50 is of superior design than the RUF (which makes sense since the G50 came much later).
G50 is also readily available and there are some shops that know how to adapt it to 930 without modifying the chassis.
In short, unless you really NEED the RUF 5 speed, there is no point in spending $$$ for it over a G50 conversion.

G50 = $2,500
G50-50 (the turbo box) $11,500 buys you a core

The RUf advantages are the lighter weight, the better gear ratios ( in mine ) for high performance use, the absolute vintage feel to the shift gate. shift lever location, the wonderful noises it makes and exclusivity as very few were ever made VS the more readily available parts/service of the G50.. A decision between the two I did not make as the RUF was already installed in the 1977 930 ( along with a long list of other upgraded items ) when I bought it many years ago from the Checkered Flag / Long Beach division.

I have to agree with the sheer cool factor of the RUF. I think it will be the "must have" thing for the R-Gruppe type when the 930 gets it's own Gruppe.

If you hear of one for sale that you based your idea on, let me know. I would be interested in it. Thanks in advance Tony@voitureltd
