First time you almost soiled yourself in a 930
up until the early 2000s while i was in late 20s i have never driven a 930 turbo. i have always been a 356 and a natural asperated 911 guy.
I came across a rode hard and put away wet 84 930 gray market car from Florida that i couldn't pass up. The motor had lots of upgrades larger turbo andial ic 964 cams adjustable wastegate, a fuel management system. All stuff i knew nothing about. i would twist knobs not knowing what they did just to see if it made a difference later i found out it was for the bov and the waste gate and something to do with the fuel . According to the papers i got with the car it had a between 420 and 482hp pending knob position. so said the dyno sheets. and a stacks of papers and receipts as thick as a old school phone book. after tinkering all summer setting up the suspension replacing the spring plates with fully adjustable ones. so i could corner balancing ( car had a slight crab walk from an incident prior to my ownership) replacing fuel lines and chasing electrical gremlins the usual stuff . The car became a really nice fair weather driver. As summer ended and the north east cool fall mornings were here. I was getting ready to put the car away for the winter before the salt hit the roads not to mention the car had headers no heat . One cool mid 40 deg morning heading into work just as the suns coming up . There is this long on ramp about 3/4 a mile long with a mild right hand curve and a slight crest just before you merge onto the 4 lane highway and its all wide open you can see everything in all directions. The type on onramp that just begs you to get on it and stay on it . So i did what i did 100s of times before with a regular 911 ( which was usually the high point of my day). but this time i had a turbo and a knob to twist and not another car insight ... so I spun the the boost knob all the way to the right and waited for the light to change . The light turned green and off i went. slamming through the gears pure bliss sucked back into my seat. By the time I'm at the end of the on ramp in 3rd gear and just prior to easing into 4th as i hit the slight crest where the ramp meets the highway, Where i usually ease off the gas and drive semi normal. The car went full boost , it went from pure bliss to pure panic. The rear of the car lost all its down force from the crest in the road and the cold tires didn't grip .tires broke loose i shot sideways across all 4 lanes of the highways at a 45deg angle going close to 100 miles an hour sideways. all 4 tires instantly liquified and smoke was everywhere, it was over just as quick as it started. I regained control just before kissing the guard rail on the opposite side of the highway . I drove to work with white knuckles and flat spots on all 4 fires . later that next day i drove past the spot of the incident. 4 dark black skid marks in a cool twisted pattern at least a city block long. I drove for another week hoping the tires would round out, no such luck. i went to get new tires and told the tire guy my story. He looked at me like was an idiot ( if the shoe fits right) Then he proceeds to tell me the tires on the car we not DOT rated they were track tires and should not be used under 50 deg . who knew .. obviously i should have it was printed right on the tires. NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE live and learn., This pucker memory was the single driving factor to upgrade the turbo on the the 76 I'm currently building to the evergreen k27 raptor it has a more gradual boost curve than the early stock turbos. Good story, funny how they can all be similar in this car…
Just bought my 3.0 930 the day before, drove it 400 miles home, no problems, she just needed some love… it had 15-20 year old visibly glazed tires, I knew it when i bought it, took the chance driving home. The next morning i got up starting at her, i was going to wait till my tires came in the following week… I sat there thinking about the rumors of massive turbo lag, and the widowmaker moniker… hell, I went to driving school, I had my racing license, I knew what i was doing… f it, I’m taking her out. Drove up the hill away from my house like a bat outa hell, traffic signal at the top of the hill was timed just right, a nice quick right hander onto a 6 lane high speed road. I’ve done this a hundred times before, in whatever i was driving at the time. I set her up, downshifted to 2nd while braking hard to the intersection, turned in, hit the gas and she held just right, right up until the lag ended and the boost kicked in. I was immediately sideways all i could think was don't lift don't lift… slid sideways across all 3 of my lanes right up to the center island, just missing the curb. Gathered her up, and myself… turned around and coasted down the hill back to my house in a self imposed limp mode right into my garage. Took the wheels off then and there and dropped them off at my tire shop… figured i didn't need another temptation to kill myself…

So like you say the story is much the same.... I was leaving a car show on this 1/4 mile run to the freeway. It was a concrete single lane with a gradual curve, no one around so I got down on it. Boost comes on pretty quick and I'm thru 1st and second as fast as you can think it. In 3rd I start to go sideways and all I can think of is stay in it, you can't let off!........ If you don't drive through it you'll be in the guard rail. As I hit 4th the car straightened out. With eyes wide open I hit the highway... laughing because it was so much fun. There is nothing like it.
By the way still driving on those 25 year old Pirelli's that still look like new, really need to get a new set of tires...this year.

Due to trailing throttle oversteer from a sudden lift during a lane change due to a moron jerk who was trying to block me from passing him as he dawdled along in the fast lane....
I did an absolutely perfect slow 360 turn without leaving my lane. At one point I was eyeball to eyeball with said driver doing 80mph backwards, watching as his wife beat him. I drove off like "I meant to do that"

I got nothing like that. But just after taking delivery of my car ex Japan, it was special. The car was a mess. But I just had to show an old guy down the road just after it arrived. A dark night and he is in the passenger seat and we spear it down our dead end road, in the dark. The car had a bad habit of hiking off to one side under boost. So we hit boost and I am counter steering as we floor it down the road. He is pressed back in the seat like never before (previous SC owner). That was enough, let me out. Alan

My story is on the opposite end of the spectrum: deceleration. I did something foolish. I was in the canyons, and I thought "let me try some threshold braking." The next corner was a downhill right-hander. So instead of lifting off well in advance, I kept my foot buried in the throttle until a late late moment. I hit the brakes, and it was all going fine until the left front locked up. So many thoughts went through my head in those couple seconds. What if I go wide and someone just happens to come the other way? How strong is that metal guardrail on the outside of the corner? Am I going to just destroy the side of the car? Or is it a long long way down to the bottom? Fortunately I gathered it back up and negotiated the corner with only my ego damaged. On the way back up the hill when I came to that corner, I could see one single black tire streak: the left front. It was entirely on my side of the double-yellow, as intended (thank goodness). But it started because I had hit a Botts dot, which is what initiated the lock-up.

Driving on older narrower rears because the forged wheels leak and getting fixed, it had been a "good time" on less sticky tires kind of fun....till one night on the long way home I decided to drift in 2nd on boost around a corner. Well in my car boost comes on around 60mph and that was too much for these crappy old 225 section 16's. So around I went and up on the curb with a nice little rub from a tree on my drivers door. soil!

For me, the first time I spun it at the track, top of 2nd gear, on a blind-apex corner, after what I thought was just the THOUGHT of lifting a little too late into the corner. Kept it on-track, full 360, learned the lesson, haven't THOUGHT of lifting since!!! It didn't take much to rotate the car into a spin, but it was a very lucky learning / reminder experience. I've had a few offs on-track since, but always wheels-straight into the run-off after recognizing that my entry speed was a tad too high and lifting would equal soiling...

My story's a bit different.
I was working as a wrench at the local Porsche dealership, so we were all aware of the "capabilities" of the 930's. One came in with a popped engine and the owner was tired of the whole affair and sold it to me cheap. Really cheap. Over the course about a year I fixed the engine and a bunch of other things wrong with it. I was keeping my gym buddy informed of my progress as he always had a love for all things Porsche. I finally finished it up and one day drove it to the gym. After the ohh's and ahh's, I offered to take him for a spin. So after meandering through town, we hit the freeway. I get going on a pretty good roll in the fast lane, and hit the right side of the tach in 4th, WELL into triple digit speeds. Just then I noticed a highway patrol in the next lane over. We both gasped as we passed him going at least 70 mph faster than his speed. At this point I figured I'm screwed, I'm going to the pokey, might as well keep it floored now. Then I had a flashback from what one of my superbike riding coworkers told me, "If you're ever running from the cops, get off the freeway as soon as you can, then head back the other way." As I spotted the next cloverleaf, I got on the brakes hard and downshifted, crossed over all the lanes, and dirt tracked that puppy up the cloverleaf. As we crested the top of the cloverleaf I spotted the cop, lights and sirens on, still going straight on the freeway, chasing a ghost. As we got back to the gym and drove in the parking lot, my gym buddy, with a huge grin on his face, said, "I'd kill myself if I had one of these things." |

dannobee I have a similar one.
Christmas morning, pretty freshly divorced and finding me alone it felt right that a topo speed run was in order as long as the conditions made sense. So I went to me favorite stretch and finding it totally empty (Christmas morning at 7:00am) so I continued on cresting a long hill at 168 going past an onramp which contained one lonely copper just waiting for this. He had no chance ever as I didn't let up and as I saw his lights way way back I got off and brought the old girl back home red hot and bothered. I was too clinched to get soiled.

trying to make a yellow light, so dropped into 2 second. picked up way too much speed, but thought i still had it. Stepped on the brakes hard, locked up all four wheels and slid across the intersection at an angle. Cam to a complete stop in front of the cars on the other end of the intersection.
It's a convertible slant so I was nice and out in the open with like 20 cars' full of people looking at me shaking their heads. My brand new tires had to be replaced due to the flat spots. |

Loving this thread.
And yes - the advice to turn off ASAP and go opposite direction has saved me too. But then if your destination is still far ahead, what you do is re-enter the Hway - but a mile behind the guy going flat out with flashing lights. That way you can continue your journey at his pursuit speed :-) When needs must..... Alan

Wow, lots of horror stories befitting of the term "watch this, hold my beer". I have yet to lose it sideways in a turn or otherwise. The only time I was unpleasantly surprised was when checking out one of my favorite roads that had just opened up following a complete rebuild. Been on that road a zillion times and knew it blindfolded. The barriers had been removed...meaning it was now open...so I went for it; nothing like a brand new road. So yeah, I hooked 'em up as is proper. I was tooling along at a respectable <100 mph for 3 or 4 miles until cresting a slight rise to find the barriers still in place. Just enough time to slam on the brakes and jig slightly onto the shoulder around the barriers. Close call. I think I still have a YouTube video of it.
Found the video https://youtu.be/PT3WKkfZAeo?si=KyHX6rOlsudtx7sq

ha these stories are a riot - I think I esp like best the slant cab shame face right there out in the open in front of everyone... hahahahaaa
so Oddly enough I've not had any REAL pucker moments in my 18yrs with mine, until TWICE IN THE PAST TWO YEARS - whoopz 1st was running in pretty steady rain on balding (but not terrible) rear 295/18 Super Sports cruising the highway at increasingly decreasing speeds as I kept it jussst below the what felt like hydroplane speed, about 77ish Approach the crest of a rise, see a small 'river' flowing down my lane - hover on the controls and pucker my way through it... I feel the rear start to twitch... I adjust steering & throttle SLIGHTLY - feel it some more - keep adjusting... and it finally GOES... swings one way - catch it. Swings the other - catch it. Snaps 180* now I'm sliding toward right breakdown from fast lane - thankfully empty morning road (on way to an event @ Palmer Motorsports no less lol). The breakdown lane has a MASSIVE LONNNNG ledge along it. I slide into breakdown lane and thankfully STOPPED short of said ledge. WHOOPS. The rest of the ride @ 68 or less was quite unfun. New tires that Monday! 2nd was on Targa Carolina after jusssssst getting it back from motor rebuild, hadn't driven car in almost 3yrs and re-acclimating mahself to it after driving CT to NC. We broke into run groups and were bombing along on a 1st-day fun run, I'm getting warmed up and loose, feeling good, car is happy. The caravan enters a tiiiiight haripin that keeps on turning. I'm good I'm good I'm good... until... the radius decreases and it tightens with a slight kink. I add in too much steering trying to stay with it and it IMMEDIATELY steps out a hair then SNAPS around the other way 180*... but on axis... now I'm just going backward. Thankfully it was a pretty low speed turn so I'm rolling slightly backwards - but in my panic I'd neglegted to BOTH FEET IN WHEN IN A SPIN and STALLED... in super slo mo I now see THE REMAINDER OF THE CARAVAN coming RIGHT AT ME. FARQUE!! Thankfully somehow swerved and braked right around me - everyone scattering. CHAOS. I thought for certain I was gonna kiss front bumpers with another red Gbody 911. PHEW. Less of a hole puckerer - yearrrrrs ago on my 16" Fuchs on Kumho Ecsta's I too was BOMBING along highway when I spied a pig entering onramp that I was about to overtake - so I BURIED the brakes.... long lockup skid of the RF 225 (surprised some you had LF, weight of driver and no passenger and all). Thankfully I scrubbed enough speed to not pass him - but boy oh boy did my SMOKE CLOUD pass both of us - hahahahaa. Had another RF 255/18 Super Sport lockup @ Club Motorsports DE this summer with instructor - late day, neglected to account for EMPTY FUEL TANK lack of weight. Damn did that STINK lol. Flatspotted the tire, new one comes soon. Be smarter next time! I LOVE having 255's up front, nearly (nearly!) impossible to lockup, I can brake HARD AND DEEP with near impunity. You really can't be fully comfortable in or master one of these until / unless you've experienced a spin in one - that much is CERTAIN! Now I know lol. ![]() |

Lolz Paulie- and entertainingly-written as usual.
And totally laughed at the cab sliding through the intersection too. Shame, shame! My only loop was on-track at Monticello where there might have been some witnesses from this board. Sort of brain-farted where I was on the track layout and waaaay over-cooked a kink, tried braking but bailed on that and then tried to just turn and pray the car could do it somehow... nope! Nothing but the pride hurt thankfully. My other pucker-factor was on some local streets showing my brother what the car was capable of. Really dumb and could have been very very bad... I wound out 2nd to redline/wastegate wailing so that's what, 90MPH? on a straightaway on a 30MPH road. A car pulled out of his driveway like he's entitled to do, having no idea some A-hole is going nearly 100MPH. There was no time to do anything- I stabbed at the brakes too hard and it immediately smoked the RF, tried it again and the same thing and now I'm about to rear end them at a fatal speed. There's an oncoming car too, but I end up getting back on it and crossing the double yellow to go around the driveway guy and crossing back into my lane with just feet to go on the oncoming car (who never gave an inch of room for me to increase my odds of saving their life). That was one of those heavy-breathing holy-**** what just almost happened moments I used to only get on motorcycles in my early 20s. I'm not that guy anymore, thank God. To be old and wise you first need to be young and foolish, right? ![]()

![]() ![]() Sort of brain-farted? Hmmmm. COULDNNN'T have been distracted due to - oh - some yahoojakkazz steamin up yer tail as you entered the essess??? Naaaa. That was soooo funny. I'd seen you ahead as I'd bombed the straight and was all like "GET HIM!!!" and made it my mission, a full red-mist in the eyes moment heh heh. Then you looped. Whoops. SORRY! (not sorry - hahahahaaa). Good timez brutha! Had hoped for a repeat @Tamworth this summer, seeing you pull in as I was about to track out of the pits was AWESOME, then half-session later I come around a lap and POOF there you were. So funny. Till the 'next time' good sir!! Always a riot always a hoot... |
