Deeeeeply rooted issues - found some childhood answers to me current car insanity

I've always been a ludicrous petrol head, like many a you here I'm certain. Insanity loves good company, ya know?

Stumbled upon some boxes of my childhood toys, back from about when I was 6 on. Root of many of me issues I possess today (or possess moi?) become suddenly lucid. Know yous here are simply DORK enough to share with, I do.

Some of the more interesting bits - the astute eye will name most:

Some rather neat Porsche content...

Wicked cool - the firckin detail on this is astounding (one of them pull back 'n go racers). Dig the roll bar, RSR mirrors, and NACA ducts everywhere:

Dayum, I'd forgotten about this slot car, either DP or Kremer (right). True story - me bro & me would literally dab Palmolive pump soap across the starting line of the slot car track so we could light 'em up and greasely wag them down the straight:

I dig the varying iterations of flares 'n spoilers - and I have a bunch more bodies in the box:

jeweled headlights and opening decklid on this old early 911 Matchbox:

not Porsche related but just too damn cool IMO - Jag C or D type (sorry I forget) full size slotcar, scripted Dunlop slicks even with sizing data included - kewl:

Lastly, this 'splains a LOT... I went on to pilot a clone to this me Sr. yr. of HS - Whoa! Magic Bus! (just for you Sandman):

Thanks for lettin me share... isssues - I've got 'em (including indulging in the "High Life" - yeah )... 8-)

I have all of my matchbox and need to pull them out.

I just bought my 2.5 year old son a 23 window matchbox van...

I had a lot of p-car toys and I think maybe one or two 'made' it. And now my kids are destroying them.....

Very cool! I don't have many of my cars from growing up but what I do, they seem to be all Hot Wheels cars. All futuristic/hot rod stuff.

That great. You have a nice collection there.

I still have many of my Hotwheels, Matchbox, RC cars and slot cars. I still collect Hotwheels.

That Jag looks like an XJ13.

I have a Tyco HO slotcar from my childhood that's similar to the orange/yellow #3 car you've got. Mine's black/green. Still runs like new, as my 3 yr-old son found out last month when he discovered the boxes of slotcar stuff at my parents' house. And I've got that exact same orange/silver 908 #51 car (or, at least the back half of it), too. Obviously doesn't run.

Nice pics! Love that Martini Porsche; wanna trade for my Evil bike?

I’ll even throw in some baseball trading cards!

Paul - Are you sure the deep rooted issues are not because you have been drinking Miller High Life since a kid? LOL

I was a serious collector...well as serious as any kid can be! However, most of my stuff was destroyed by my younger brother as he came up through the ranks! PECKERHEAD

Thanks for the shot of the bus, Paul...you know me too well, already!!!

I make it a point to check the Matchbox & Hot Wheels section every time I'm at a Target, Walmart, and/or toy store! I've started purchasing some basic cars that appeal to me. Nothing like the detailed, period correct cars/models that some of the other guys are into. I'm trying my best to avoid another expensive hobby! When I get a chance I'll have to snap a few pics of my lame cars...and a few buses

Thanks for sharing! I wish my original collection survived!

Thanks for the 'support' guys - I KNEW I'd be in good company here! Figured as much on others likely having many of the same heh heh. Some reason the Macro setting on my Sony V1 blur'd many of the shots - should have used the Canon DSLR.

Bill - hilarity on the 21window VW purchase for The Boy. I got the 6pack for my 6yr. old's stocking just b/c it had that van in it! Red?

Willtel - loving the matching Ocean Pacific ensemble complete with white Reeboks - sadly so sadly I def. don'd the verysame back then. D'oh!

Noah - That's cool you had the same 908. Mine was the orange / silver one, my bro had (has) the matching green one. Course, same here - we just have bodies left of that pair. He has a caseful of all our other cars, some real gems in there. He wouldn't let me take the robin's egg blue 250GT0 - that things gotta be worth some doughrayme. Speaking of 908's, here's one of me bro's Pinewood Derby cars and its inspiration:

Rod - bwhahahahaha on the Evil Kinevil bit. Whilst rummaging thru the boxes last night my bro says to me "want Evil?". I retort "no thanks - I already found another one of ours years ago and he's standing in a beer mug in the garage (next to orig. GI Joe and Tonto sporting real suede clothes). Too funny.

Gabe, *I* might have a wayubercool 935 slot car buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut you.............. 8-)

Paul B. - THANKS for the Jag correction. My stomach sank this a.m. while getting ready, somehow it popped into me head that the C/D Type's weren't mid engine. D'oh. So I was left scratching me head as to what it was. It's a wicked cool slot car - GINORMOUS! Ah HA! Lola T70 - got it. THANKS!

Here's some more shots. I only grabbed the ones I thought had 930 content or were otherwise cool. Left out the James Bond DB5 with ejection sunroof, Stutz Boat Tail, and a number of other dorkisms 8-).

Would love to see some of YOUR DORKS'S junk I would heh heh... dare ya?

Paul..

Yeah this is scary stuff.. you've got it bad.. too!

I've still got some of my old HO and AFX cars in hiding somewhere.. refuse to pull any of that stuff out for fear of reverting back.

Hey, it's bad enough dealing with multiple life size toys!

Paul

Yasin- damn, you got me figured out there now don't you. Who told? Champagne of Beers, my friend! 8-) In hindsight, 13 was prolly too early. D'oh. Living the High Life here baby - don't knock it - $15 per 30 what's not to like?

Paul - amen on keeping the stuff in the closet. Otherwise I'm tempted to construct an enormous banked 4laner and let 'em rip! Some day...

Jeff- heh, yeah knew you'd appreciate the Bus. Too funny. Besides my '76 Westy rolling party machine (picked my wife up on our 1st date in that in HS - WTF were her parents thinking???), I also had a green '77 Transporter and a blue '70 Westy - those made better forts / clubhouses than bus's tho. DON'T MAKE ME snap a pic of my sister in laws' Barbie Bus that I snarfed from her when we first met - MINE I said!

DDDD - these are only highlights, unfort. like most of yous much of me stuff was destroyed (bwHA! to the "PECKERHEAD" bit Jeff). My bro and I smashed most of our matchboxes into oblivion, sitting across from e/o and running them head on down a track. I still recall my dad's dismay as he walked in and muttered "someday you're going to regret that". Damn he was right. Sure had some good stuff, some killer R/C's too that are long gone.

I too consider collecting the new stuff but find it rather pathetic in comparison to what marvels I once had. Sigh. Just don't make 'em like they used to.

Let's see the bus pics Jeff heh heh. And any of yours' guys' silly toys. This stuff cracks me up.

I think the green/silver car (I no longer have it--it's been long lost) was a 917K. Next time I'm over at my parents' I'll take a picture of the Tyco box.

Fun stuff Paul...you're in good company...here is my childhood p-car collection:

The two in the foreground are Corgi brand. Totally inaccurate as the 911 is labelled turbo, but is actually a longhood RS with ducktail. The 924 says turbo on it as well, but doesn't have the correct hood scoop and front cowl vents. No problem though when I was 8 yrs old though, turbo meant "fast" and "cool" The gold 928 matchbox was my first p-car love. It wasn't until I drove my first rear engined aircooled VW (magic bus, senior year in highschool - just like you Paul) that I began to appreciate what the 911 was all about.

Totally 100% dorky. My parents must have been proud. It was the sweetest bus ever though. A 1973 which I bought with 34k original miles. The thing was like new.
