3.0 vs. 3.3 distributor

I have a 3.0 turbo with a broken distributor. I bought a distributor to a 3.3 turbo. Is it possible to get the newer one to fit my car? Im suspecting that they rotate in different directions. I might just get parts from the newer and fit them in my old broken one.

Any thoughts?

Think they spin the same way for both engines....I believe the turbos to '89 and 911SC both spin counterclockwise but I am not certain.

I have been researching this for a couple of hours now and I´m getting even more sure about the different directions. If I compere my old (the new hasnt arrived) with pictures I found in the forum I can se that the drive gear is not the same. And also the weights inside look like they are mounted in opposit directions. I guess I have to just swap the broken parts.

how did the car run with the defective distributor ? just curious

"A left-turning distributor is installed on 3.3 liter turbocharged engines" was taken from page 28-14 of my Porsche turbo service manual.

Does that mean clockwise?

Sounds like counterclockwise to me.

It runned just fine. But with 2000rpm idle. When I set idle to normal I only got 15degree advance at 4000rpm. This was not a big problem to fix. But while taking the distributor apart I broke the magnetic disk.

3.0 dizzy is clockwise 3.3 is counter clockwise.

Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know if the curve of the 3.0 Turbo completely different than a N/A 3.0? I will be dropping some low compression pistons in my spare 3.0SC motor soon for a turbo project and just curious.

Another way to check rotation is look at the way the wires are layed out on the distributor cap. Firing order should be consistent with all years of flat 6 so 1-6-2-4-3-5
see link here: http://autorepair.about.com/library/firing_orders/bl-fo-11477.htm
So look at your cap and trace the wires. This will tell you which way it rotates. Unless your wire layout was reversed but then I don't think it would have run at all.
Only other explanation is the 76-77 model 3.0 liter turbos were unique and spun clockwise.

75-77 were unique, like the Carrera 3.0 same crank as a2.7.The SC 3.0 had a larger main bearing as did the 3.3.
