The "art" of rationalization

Slow 'n Rusty's thread on 996tt values got the gears turning in my head. I've not been a fan of the late model p-cars, but its difficult to argue with a 400+hp twin turbo, air conditioned, awd, gps nav, heated seats, grocery hauler for $40k(ish).

So I began to imagine trading in the current DD ('06 Mini Cooper S) and upgrading to a 996tt. Suppose I get 15k on trade for the MINI, then I need to cough up another 25k or so to get into the 996tt. Hmmn...I could swing that, yes I could.

Wait a second...a couple of issues with this plan:

1) Can I fit me, the wife, our two dogs (combined weight of 145lbs) and our stuff for a vacation road trip (which we have comfortably done several times in the MINI)? I don't think so. A DD with less cargo capacity than the MINI is probably not prudent.
2) My wife cares little about cars (appliances to her) and is very sensitive about what her colleauges would think of her driving a Porsche. She feels it makes a statement and would have people making unfavorable assumptions about her. She's not going to like replacing the friendly, playful MINI, with a turbo Porsche.

Oh well. Not such a good idea then, too bad. But hey, I just "saved" myself 25k. I suppose I could reallocate that 25k I "almost" spent (or a fraction of it) to my 930. Yeah, why not. If I can't have a 996tt for a daily driver, I should surely get a intercooler and maybe some Lindsey Fuchs for the 930. I mean, I just saved 25k by talking myself out of buying a 996tt, right?

So, thanks to Slow 'n Rusty and all of you for helping me with the 930 budget for 2009

That was good. I had various opinions while reading, then I read the last line and just smiled ear to ear. Only if the wife will rationalize it that way.

Sounds like it will be a real bargain to spend money on your 930.

996TT will have about the same room as a Mini - and the 996TT has loads of room up front.
Sell the Mini private party style, and have 2 Porsches!

No downside ;-)

I don't know about that. The only 996 I have been in was a cabriolet, and it was very cramped in the back. Certainly the coupe is bigger in back, but its still a tight squeeze for a Rottweiler and a Pit Bull mix. I had the dogs in the back of the 930 once and it was a joke. We were bursting at the seams.

I've been in both plenty of times - a coupe (not a cab) and a Mini.

The Mini rear seat "room" is virtually equal, and the luggage room in back is very small. BUT...you can put the Mini seats down, cannot do that in a 996. I'd call it a draw space-wise and go with your heart and what you want - the 996.

Don't know if I'd be hauling a Rott and Pit Bull in either car, FWTW.

Craig...you're like the little devil on my shoulder egging me on: "Do it!"

Heart says the 996tt would be a sweet DD and give me twice as much opportunity to drive a Porsche. Head says that its not a draw space-wise btw a 996 and MINI.

Can 996tt do this?:

Ducati 900 engine on its way to machine shop today to get broken headstud removed.

Sell the Mini (VERY high resale value!) and get what you want - surely you have a another crap car to haul an engine in?
