Fire Extinguisher

Just curious if anyone has a fire extinguisher mounted in their car? I was told it would be a good idea since my car is over 25 years old.....

I am looking for a (powered) passenger seat fire extinguisher bracket for my car also. I see that Rennline and Brey-Krause have them for sale. I am looking for a used one.

Yep, since one of the underdash wires(non-fused) melted! No fire, just smoke. Fortunately, I was able to quickly pull over and turn off the ignition. If it had occurred during rush hour in Boston, it would have been a different story!

And no, I have not had the need to use it since it was installed.

Dave,
Did you ever find out the cause of your high-temp wire?

Yes I did. It was the power to the power antenna. The wire grommet on the inner fender had worn through and over time the insulation of the wire worn off. It got pretty hot.....the wire started melting and fusing to the other wires laying next to it.

Wow, that is a great piece of trivia for those of us that have the power antenna. I am quite surprised that circuit is not fused.

Alright, everyone with power antennas run out to your car and check the wiring on the inner fender. It might save your car!

I have one in each of my collector / sports cars and in my tow vehicle - cheap insurance. I use BK brackets in the Porsches and really like them. I also like the BK quick release much better then the cheap QR's that come with the fire extinguishers.

I have a Halon extinguisher in both cars....I lost my 99 C2 to a dash fire that started behind the radio while I was driving...very helpless feeling standing there on the curb watching your car burn up. I went with Halon....not the Haletron....because the Halon is much more efficient....in fact, so much more efficient that FAA requires aircraft to use the Halon...what does that tell you? Most of the vendors will steer you to the Haletron because of environmental issues.

+1 Halon is the only way to go. Chemical extinguishers can cause a real mess and damage.

I have a Brey-Krause mount that attaches to the passenger seat rails. The bottle (2.5 lb) is positioned under the passenger's calves. This came with the car when I bought it. Good thing is that the fire extinguisher is close at hand, even when I'm belted in. Some guy on the 911 Technical forum mounts his in the front trunk, which is probably as good as useless, IMO. Bad part about this BK mount is that it limits forward travel of the seat. Usually not a big deal, as I don't carry passengers. But if I did, that would hamper rear-seat access. I don't know if the newer BK mounts still have this problem, though.

I went with a handheld 2.5 lb Halotron fire extinguisher.

If you're super-serious about fire prevention or racing, you can install a 25-lb bottle with remote nozzles.

I've got one mounted transversely on the tunnel hump just behind the the heater control, CVRPCA requires them to run DE's. I'd run outside and check the stats on it for you but it's in storage right now.

Ocassionally I'll corner so hard one of the two 'clips' will pop undone - that's my barometer it's been a "good day" heh heh.

Like it's been said - cheap insurance. Why not?

I just spent most of today installing my Extinguisher under the passenger seat.

I bought the Rennline (Power seat mounting kit) along with a 2.5 lbs MaxOut Extinguisher from our host.
Rennline makes high quality bolton's (not cheap, but good quality) IMO

Herz a shot

Nice choice Paul
I swear this Extinguisher mount added 10hp to my car!

Seriously, in the years I've owned my 930, it always made me nervous to not have one in the car after reading Chuck Jones story.
