82 Turbo - gray market?

Without a lot of purpose I generally scan a number of sources for 911s. (I'm looking for a candidate for an EV conversion, but that probably won't happen for another year or so.) Today I saw an add in the Chicago Craigslist for a 1982 930. In it, the poster states (ignore the shouting and the crappy spelling and grammar), "IT WAS IMPORTED NEW BY A CAL. PORSCHE DEALER FOR PERSONAL USE GRAY MARKET CAR NO TUURBOS WHERE IMPORTED THAT YEAR LOOK IT UP THIS A SPECIAL CAR".

My question: Is this really such a special car, assuming it's as the seller states?

Thanks,

Skip Montanaro

All 930s are special in my opinion

I would say there is nothing particularly special about a 1982 930. Its true that the 930 model was not imported in the US from 1980-1985, so this is a grey market car which is fairly common since there was no other way to get a 930 during those years.

Some people think that's a plus since the Euro cars had less emissions crap on them than US models. Other people think that a grey market car should be avoided because its possible to have difficulties with insurance and registration with a non US VIN (depends on the state you live in).

If it was imported new, it's a little more special than the gray market cars that spent their first miles ripping around the autobahn, but it's still a gray market car. They may be fine, but they may have hard miles and poor US conversion.

If you're building an EV, why don't you start with a narrow body car for less aero drag?

Oh, certainly. I was just browsing recent 911 postings in the Chicago Craigslist and saw this. I was curious about the poster's statement about the car's "special"ness. When the time comes I seriously doubt I will start with a wide body car. Besides the aero aspect I'm more fond of narrow body cars anyway...
