alternator/fan housing part number check
So...I'm trying to get a few things sorted before Turbopalooza '09.
I've been hearing intermittent whining from the alternator fan area practically since I bought the car over 1 year ago. The noise is only noticeable at idle. A small increase in RPM seems to stop it. I assumed that this was a sick alt bearing letting me know it was going to die soon. Well, pulled it apart today and found that the alternator looks almost brand new. No noticeable play in the bearings and it spins very smoothly. Once the fan/alt assembly was out, I could see that I have a crack in the housing. Furthermore, I cannot seem to get the alternator out of the housing. Hitting the mounting studs with my mallet seem to do nothing. The crack in the housing is not clear through, but I am thinking now that the housing is deformed (which is making it a PITA to remove the alt) and my noise is the fan rubbing slightly at times. My fan housing has the p/n 901 106 101 5R According to PET, the p/n is 930 106 006 Confused here. Do I have the right part? Anyone with a 79 out there who can tell me what they've got?
