930 Air Pump Q
Does the air pump output air continuously?
I changed the air filter on the air pump (which looked original and like a block of clay) and subsequently checked the hose coming out of the pump for air flow and I've got no air coming out. There is a pulley on the back that turns and the belt is intact. Is this something I need to change if it is no longer pumping air? What would be the ramifications? The car passed smog just fine last year. Thanks guys! Mike

I'm pretty sure it pumps all the time. I've seen where the air filter on an 911SC I had never seemed to get dirty as well. Maybe it just does pull much?

The air pump should produce ABOUT 3-5 psi of pressure. It's a vane type pump and if not working, usually has locked-up or worn out vanes (blades). Many folks have ditched theirs so you can buy them cheap.
The engine control unit activates an electrical solenoid that switches a valve sending produced air either "upstream" to the exhaust pipes (just after exiting the combustion chamber) or "downstream" to the catalytic converter to afterburn remaining pollutants. If you want to help the environment, get a pump that produces air and make sure that your smog hoses, valves, and piping are functioning. Technically, with respect to smog laws, if you pass smog tests now, don't worry about it. If you fail smog for high carbon monoxide and/or high hydrocarbons, get an air pump that works and retest.

I have not had any issues with my air pump other than the space it takes up on the work bench as I havent thrown it in the trash yet.

So I got the smog pump belt tightened up and now it's making noise.. sounds like a a low pitched bird or something.. happens for a while, then stops, then starts back up again.
Looks like I need a new pump.. part # is 930 113 114 01 if anyone happens to have one laying around. Thanks!
