oil cooler size

Is this a good center mount cooler?

Setrab 172AN12D Oil Cooler 6-1/2"x22" w/ An-12 fittings

Any better suggestions?

Greetings:

Personally I installed a 2nd generation mazda rx7 oil cooler..Approx 25-27inch.long 2-1/2thick, 4-6-height.(junk yard-$35-$100).Search-Some guys on the board it. And I tried it out. Brought the lines-bradied & 12an fittings on amazon-cheapest place...Brought the 2 -30mm straight fitings & 2-12an fittings/weld on the oil cooler at BAT-INC-Florida-
I under $200 after I was done....Worth it...INMOP.

That sounds about what I have. Really no point going bigger because you are not going to get air through it from the smaller air dam opening. -12 will work as well.

I'm using a Setrab 50-150-7612 (I believe same dimensions) and works great.

I have the 272d and would advise that you get -16 connector if possible. Depending on the age of the cooler, it might not be possible to change connectors. This will allow incresed cooling if you go to a bigger engine.

Can someone tell me how the model numbers correlate with the coolers?

Do some of the coolers vary in diameter internal tubing size?

How much surface space of cooling do these coolers have?

I just checked on-line and I have the (172) A72F225 oil cooler. You can determine the cooling area by L X H = A. For the 172, it's 6.5" x 22.5''=146.25 square inches.

I have the 22x6.5 Setrab or Mocal from BAT with the thermostat that comes with their kit. In what should have been the worst-case scenario (warm evening with extended dyno runs) oil temps never got over 80 Celcius (~175 degrees.) That's with a GT2 oil pump.

Thanks guys.

One of the reasons I'm asking for diameter size of the tubing and such is because I may try to cut a couple of openings in the stock valance and stick 2 long, narrow, and shallow coolers in there if they'll fit. I need to know how much volume/ real surface are I'll need for proper cooling.

I'm still trying to figure out a way to keep the stock valance. I've got 2 fender coolers already but they ain't doing the job.

I'm aware that space is limited and air space behind the mounted cooler is needed.

We'll see.

There is a way to keep the OEM valance. I don't like any of the aftermarket ones and love the OEM rubber lip. Also kept the fender cooler connected in parallel. Track temps went from 220~250 to 190, keeping the OEM look.

Nice one Miguel.

Mine is behind an MAShaw RSR Narrowbody front spoiler.

You can also solve the flow-through and clearance issue with hood venting. Which is superoffentittengeil.

Are you suggesting cutting through the wall between the trunk and the valance? If so, to wedge the whole cooler back there or to use a couple of 3" hoses and a custom fab housing to let the air escape?

My installation has 1.5" of clearance between the cooler and the tub = allowing plenty of air flow through the cooler while moving. No tub/hood mods required, only notching of the bumper to to raise the cooler through it keeping the rubber lip position as OEM.

Hi Miguel,
I may very well copy your invention, but I'm first exploring some other options. EP Slick had cut 2 large symetrical squares in his valance and fit a cooler in there. With space being so limited, I'm wondering if there are any other solutions.

Anyone put a cooler in the trunk and use air ducting?

yes, search will reveal some very cool oil cooler ducting mods to the front and to the trunk.

Mounting Oil Cooler inbound with exit scoop in hood?

Thanks John. Good find.

Hood venting must work brilliantly.

Is there a way to vent the air without cutting the hood?

Biting the bullet and buying a RUF style valance. I'm aware that the valance makes it a bit tight for the cooler. Before I purchase a cooler, anyone want to give me a heads up on sizing specific to that valance???
