Briefly Running Turbo Without Airbox?
Can you run a turbo motor for a minute or two inside a garage (NOT on the road) without the airbox? Reason being is that I am trying to see if there are any vacuum leaks as there are so many plugged/capped lines from the PO that it won't be possible to do with the airbox on.
If I can, do I need to block off the big line that goes to the oil tank? Also, just to the left of the fuel distributor block there is a long stemmed rod with a ring on top. It is maybe 4-5" high and looks like it does diddly-squat. What the heck is that for? (I can take a photo if I didn't explain it good enough) |
I think you can runit w/o the air box. Be careful not to drop anything into the metering plate opening of course.
The long stemmed rod sounds like the A/F adjustment. It takes a 3-4mm allen wrench that you insert and push down to engage. Takes very little adjustment to make big changes. CW to richen it and CCW to lean it out. Quote:

Miguel Antonett, did you just buy a filter and fabricate a top plate to secure it onto the opening? Do you have a filter part number?

I had a small air filter similar to that on mine so I could get at the WUR and adjust it easily.
When I took the small air filter off and put the factory housing with a K&N element in it back on my mechanical boost gauge with telltale is showing .5bar higher boost with no other changes. The intake noise is quieter too. |
Miguel was kind enough to share all his notes (literal notes) and a coupla convos with me on this, I finished last week. IIRC it's K&N E-3270, ~ $40. Autozone 'Mr. Gasket' 6.25" short paper filter came with top / bottom mounting plate.
Use the top cover and the K&N rests perfectly on the air plate. Either manifold all the breather hoses (T'd together) into a drilled center hole, or filter them separately. JFairman, did you measure the boost decrease with the 1" tall filter (that came with 'Mr. Gasket') or a taller thicker K&N? I'm noting no change in my boost, and I (personally) loooove the increased intake sound. With windows shut it's comical (to me). And the voluminous engine compartment real estate made available was quite liberating feeling. Airbox BEGONE! I tried to insert Miguel's diagram - he went waaaay out of his way to help me with mine - but it's .pdf and I'm not savvy enough to finagle it here otherwise. The small air filter I have is made and marketed for the 4 cylinder slammed civic nitrous ricer crowd. It was $20.
It's an APC brand and similar to K&N. I think you can get an idea of it's size from this pic. I just had to tape off the inside and outside of the filter media while cutting the hole in the bottom bigger to fit. I put a large 0-ring under it for air sealing. I do like how it has more air intake area through the top of it. That has to help it flow air a little. I only put it on so I could tune the WUR or change the fuel head without taking so much stuff off to get at them. The factory air cleaner definately flows more air than one this small one, and the powerflow intakes with the large conical K&N filters flow even more air than the factory unit because of greater surface area. BMC sells a good one too. I don't like the loud intake hiss from this little air cleaner when you get on it. I do like the turbo whistle from the exhaust and the sound of the 911 motor.
