One way to determine if the comp is gone is to see if the high pressure side and the low pressure side equalize over time when not being used. If you have a low pressure switch it will be activated and the comp will not come on. If there are no leaks in the system then the reed valves inside the comp are leaking and allowing the pressure to equalize. This will give you the same results as the system leaking. A new comp without the clutch is about $350. Swaping the clutch from one to the other is no big deal. Make sure that you keep all of the shims and put them back like they were on the old unit. My current system is like the one with a leaking reed valve and I have to bypass the low pressure switch when it sits too long. It still cools good but won't maintain pressure over a long unused period. Do not buy a rebuilt unit. A new one will be about $100 more but will be worth it.
