Newbee with gear selection issues
Hi everyone, im Dan.
I have a 911 sc with a gear selection issue. Background. Car was my fathers. he used it up until 2002 engine had been rebuilt along with gearbox etc by Porsche Madrid few years before this and in 2001 body was restored rubbed down and resprayed till 2012 the car had done less than 100 miles a year and as it wasnt used it was given to me. My question is...... i am able to get into carefully get into gears but not enough to drive it, just to move it. i have a very wobbly gear stick, i believe it might be the bushes on the linkage, so is it hard to repair and what bits should i order. any help would be great. |

You posted on the 930 forum instead of the 911 forum, but a shift linkage is a shift linkage.
What you could have is very simple, there is a universal style coupler between the rear end of the shift rod & the front end of the transmission linkage rod. This is located under a cover, on the tunnel, just in front of the rear seat. Pull back the carpet, remove the 4 screws holding down the cover, pull the cover off. You will see the universal style coupler right there. There is a clamp on 1 end and a set screw on the other end. One or both of these could be loose. The set screw tightens into a machined little pocket on the shaft, so alignment there is a no brainer. Alignment on the shifter rod is a bit more difficult, but not much. If you need to, loosen the clamp bolt until the shifter rod rotates easily within the coupler. Set the shifter handle, so that it is vertical, and in the shift plane of 3rd & 4th gear. Tighten down the clamp bolt. Now tighten the set screw so that it goes into the little machined pocket on the transmission shift linkage rod. Your done. Hope it is just this simple for you! Mark |
