The manual says that for USA versions older than 1978 "Vacuum hose disconnected, but high pressure hose can remain connected as long as the test is made without engine load" The other hose goes to the "Thermo Valve"

Discconect and plug them both when setting timing to 4000 rpm specs (at least that's how it is with my '87).
As far as unlatching that rear distributor clamp, it is a real bear to get to (fat fingers don't work to well). You don't need to pull the cap to set timing anyway. Just follow the wire coming from #1 cylinder back to the cap if all you're trying to do is identify where it's plugged in.

You can pop the rear distributor cap clip off with a flat blade screwdriver but then it's even more fun snapping it back on if the charge pipe and intercooler is in place.

Remove all the vacuum lines from the distributor when timing the distributor.

You can plug them with golf tee's or whatever if you want but it makes no difference if you just leave them dangling in air unplugged on a 930.
Plugging them will have no effect on timing and the owners manual and the sticker under the rear hood on an '87 doesn't say to plug them, just disconnect them.

Some emission controlled carburated and injected cars from the seventies and eightees had SO much vacuum controlled emissin crap hooked up to the carburator and intake manifold and multiple diverter valves that they were supposed to be plugged when timing the distributor.

Thanks guys for helping ertech. My 930 is modified now so I don't have a distributor and have not done a conventional timing adjustment on my car. The computer does it all now.
