WEVO short shifter on a 4 speed?

Has anyone has installed a WEVO Short Shifter or/and coupler on a 4 speed gearbox?
The gearbox belongs to an '88 930 Turbo. |

Oh yea. Best investment you'll ever make to your transmission system. It isn't a short shifter but maybe that is why mine felt tempermental at times over the years. It takes some adjusting. And get the u joint while your're at it.

 YOU LIVE!!!
Just kidding. So you have the WEVO on a four-speed, then? |

Here's a recent thread on the WEVO shifter:

HUGE difference on a 930. Huge. One of the best things you can do for your 930.

 How is the feeling

when you shift with Wevo? Is the feeling firm?
I installed the Hargett shifter, and it was pure BS. No feeling at all, like putting a stick i a box of jar. The screws get loose. And when you see how the stick is mounted in the mechanism, well this is not German quality. There is 2 bolts on each side if you tight them thenyou can't shift and if you don't tight them , the stick will end up loose in your hand. So I will let my builder construct a new more heavy duty mechanism or buy a Wevo. |

Maybe it's that my tranny needs a rebuild, but I didn't find the Wevo shifter that huge an improvement. It's certainly an improvement, but I still feel like I'm shifting a truck.

The WEVO absolutely transforms a stock 930 4 speed box. It is just incredible, and I am very skeptical of magic bolt on solutions to anything.

The Wevo makes a significant difference over the stock shifter. Shorter throw and much more precise.

I had a factory short shifter for 15 years before I got the Wevo. The Wevo is wider spaced by far. I guess I dont recall how bad the original unit must have been.

I bought the Weltmeister and never used it. I partially installed it and the removed it and bought the wevo and linkage. If you would like to try a cheaper solution pm me and I will sell it for half price ( the weltmeister that is ). Im sure there are people who are using the weltmeister and it works just fine but I liked the aluminum and machined finish of the wevo. Much better product but you pay for it!!!

The Weltmeister is not that bad, more to do with setting it up. If you replace all the bushings and tighten things up, it takes some trial and error to find the correct adjustment points and then it seems to work pretty good. It's not spring loaded, either, but I've seen some pics of guys spring loading their shifters on the coupler using the body as connecting points for the springs. Kind of made me shake my head but it looked interesting. Maybe a Wevo billet coupler might work as good with a Weltmesiter shifter. Even with new bushings, it appears that the Weltmeister is very sensitive to any play. Side to side has to be snug using the front adjuster. Anyone try the $200 coupler with a $100 Weltmeister?

Here's my coupler with homemade bushings from Dayco "Futura" 13/32" AC barrier hose.
Cost is less than a dollar, the bushings stay put and it's tight as can be. Works great with a Weltmeister short shifter with new shifter and shift rod bushings all slathered with moly grease. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250560354.jpg |

 I'll add my 2 cents.
My car came with a Weltmeister short shifter, and a week after I bought the car I replaced the coupler with new OEM. My transmission was fully rebuilt by the PO about 10,000 miles ago. I replaced the shifter first, then the coupler a few weeks later, with the Wevo components. I don't know how much wear was on the Weltmeister, but it felt 'rubbery' in comparison with the Wevo. The Wevo had a nice solid feel, and seems to be built very well. Just a guess, but it will probably hold up a little longer than the Weltmeister. The Weltmeister also requires a spacer plate under the shifter tower, where as the Wevo does not. Whomever installed the Weltmeister in my car, forced the console over the now taller shifter tower and cracked it pretty badly. Overall, I like the new feel. My stock coupler was fairly new, so the Wevo coupler only made a very slight difference, but I bet the Wevo unit will stay tighter for a longer period of time. Something else to consider, is Wevo motor mounts. The shifter bolts to the tub, but the motor/trans is free to move around on the stock mounts, which directly effects the relationship between shifter and trans. I replaced my rear mounts with Wevo 'blue' mounts, and it made a noticible difference in shifting, especially under high power. |

 hargett shifter

i have a harget on my four speed and it has worked very well for me. the shifter location is much better than the factory location. and, since i do not have a handbrake it does not interfere with that. takes a bit to get adjusted. also i drilled an indention into the mating surface for the set screw.

 WEVO shifters are superb

We love them. Only ones we recommend, only ones we'll sell, only ones we'll install.
They don't solve gearbox problems, i.e. your 2nd & 3rd synchros are hammered, or the transmission and/or engine mounts are shot. But if the gearbox and mounts are in good shape, you won't find a better shifter for your 911. Very positive feel engaging gears, reduced throw, rubbery loose shifter feeling is gone... Their shift coupler / joint makes it feel that much better. Only thing better is a G50 with a WEVO shifter and PSJ. Yes, but have pretty high price tags for what they are. But these are the products that fit right the first time, work exactly as advertised, and don't seem to fail. Too bad the same can't be said about more products offered for these cars! Only complaint: no "Classic" version for the G50. Park it in the sun for a while, and that cute billet shift knob burns an imprint into your palm! |
