Off topic - P-51 Valve Train

Sorry about being off topic, but I thought those of you who do your own valve adjustments might find the below pictures of a P-51 Merlin (I am a member of the ground crew and sometimes get to fly it) engine valve train interesting. The adjustment procedure is nearly identical to the 930 motor - loosen the lock nut, insert feeler gauge (.010), adjust elephant foot, tighten lock nut.

This is a shot of one side of the V12 Merlin. You can just see the exhaust stacks to the right. Each stack handles one cylinder and two valves - it's the ultimate Zork tube.

This is a shot of the top of one cylinder - 4 valves per cylinder. Check out the cam lobes and the "rockers" - otherwise known as Merlin fingers. A complete set for this V12 is $17,000. The black "X" on each finger means the adjustment is complete. Oh, and each plug is $100.

This is a shot of the cam drive. As you can see, a shaft comes up from the crank where the cam gear forms a type of ring and pinion. Timing the cams after a complete teardown is not too difficult, but the process of safety wiring everything is very time consuming. This is 1940's engine technology at its best - over 1700 cu in, twin plug, 4 valves per cylinder, 6.0:1 CR, water and oil cooled, dual stage supercharger and over 1,700 shp.

The engine is going through a 100 hour inspection after a very successful P-51 ride campaign at Oshkosh this year.

Enjoy - I do...

Waaaaaaaay cool Don, THANKS for sharing that. I always wondered what your avatar referred to, great to hear you're part of that fray - and get to pilot it! That's beyond unreal, good for you.

Enjoy? Sure did!

Wow, that is very cool. Thanks Don.
You should ask a moderator to move it to the OT section so more Pelicans can see it.

Soooooooo, do the valve covers leak like a 911's?

Nope. Amazingly, there is very little oil coming from this plane. As for our radial motor powered aircraft, it's why we buy oil by the barrel.

Off topic is usually too acidic and non-productive for me to offer up any of my time just my opinion. I have better things to do than argue and bicker, like drive.

Very cool Don. There is a fellow in the little town I grew up in that has a couple of P-51s. One is polished raw metal! The supercharged engine tries to turn the plane around the prop on take off. Incredible machines.

Every so often, a P-51 will buzz over my house... the sound of the beautiful Merlin sends me running outside without fail!

Don,

That's great. Are you an official pilot of this plane or does the owner just hand you the controls from time to time? That is, do you take off and land that beast?

There are only two sounds in this world that literally make the hair stand up on my arms -- one is the thunder of a P-51 (and the other, perhaps oddly, is perfect, a cappella, vocal harmony). I spent the whole weekend at the Monterey historics watching spectacular Porsches, including 917s, 908s, and 935s at full song, and though I love them, not one of them can compare with the sound of a P-51.

You're fortunate to be able to be around such an incredible machine.

Very cool! I've seen similar engine in a Centurion tank, minus the blower and light-alloy stuff. But the real jewel of WWII engine tech must be Napier Sabre. They allegedly got 5500hp from 2240 cubic inches in the end of engine programme...150 hp/L and no valves!

The phrase "P51 drivetrain" would lure me almost anywhere.

I love those planes! A P51D with the D-Day invasion stripes is as close to pure sex appeal as any machine can get IMO.
