convert 89 targa to 930
is it possible/worth converting a stock '89 Targa to a 930?
My car is just too slow. I'm not interested at this point in tracking the car, just want a faster DD. Can porsche slant hoods still be had? Could I use my current hood with a slant nose? Hope this question isn't too naive. Oh yeah, I'm poor! thanks. |

a 930 motor will run between 9-15k. alone. I would contact protomotive, they have a single turbo conversion kit for carreras. wide body quarter panels and fenders will run roughly 6-8k plus labor. and then theres suspension, brakes, etc. you may be better off trading your carrera for a well sorted 930.

thanks for the quick words of wisdom. aren't 930's hard to come by these days?
the factory 930's are just '87, 8's & 9's right? any threads or sites that go over in detail what people typically do to DD's to increase performance without breaking the bank? thanks. |

These should do the trick for you.
1984 street/track 930, gt35r, 400rwhp 85 Carrera Targa Protomotive Turbo 1989 460 hp Turbo Cab G-50 metal 993 body Check the Rennlist classifieds as well. The links from RL don't transfer to Pelican very good for me but there are some 930's for sale.

i just picked up my '86 930 for $20k. You would be much better off selling yours and getting a 930. Now if thats not an option, and your a handy guy, find somebody that has the factory 930 headers/exhaust/turbo for sale and put it on your car. It will take some fab work but i would bet you could have it done for a couple grand. Should give you a few more ponies to hold you over till you can step up the combo.
But my best advice is to trade up. |

930s were made from 75-89 early turbos were 3.0 cars with small brakes, but their lighter and more nimble. 78 was the start of 3.3 cars. big brakes, intercooler etc. their all good, just find one thats well sorted and passes a ppi in flying colors.

thanks folks for all the info.
If I was to focus in on a particular model year or two, what would it be? |

well modded 3.0s are a blast. most say that 78-79's are the best years, then 89 for the 5spd. i would look for any year thats been taken care of, preferrably already modded. stock these things can be somewhat frustrating to drive. nothing a turbo, muffler, and 1 bar boost spring cant help though.
