965 outer axle boot replacement?

Can somebody tell me if the outer cv joint boot of a 965 (C2 turbo)can be replaced without removing the inner joint and boot? If so, HOW?

Haven't tried it yet on my C2T but I'd be interested in following your efforts.

If the axles are similar to a -89, then you pull it off and just do one side or the other. It's a good idea to check both while your in there, re-pack and add half of a red plastic straw from a spray can in the small side of the boot to let any built up pressure out. use a plastic tie on that end as well.

The rear suspension on a 964 or 965 is completely different and much improved over a 911 or 930 so maybe you can remove just the outer CV and service it.

You can't do that with the rear banana control arm on a 930 with it's recessed CV joint.
Either way it's a good idea to remove the axles and remove the CV's and clean all the old semi-liquefied grease out and inspect the grooves for excessive wear from the 6 steel balls and possible cracks in the ball cage.
Then repack them with high percentage molybdenum disulfide grease made for CV joints, and thats not the generic stuff you get at walmart or the average local auto parts store.

Then put on new boots and clamps. You can use an 90 degree type wire cutter dikes to crimp the GKN/lobro clamps if you don't have the special tool or use heavy duty tie wraps.

The replacement GKN/lobro CV joints are mediocre quality compared to the origonal Lobro CV joints that were made to Porsche's specifications. They are not made of the same quality steel.

The Empi CV joints marketed for dune buggy's that are the same thicker size as the pre '86 930 CV's you see for cheap on ebay are worse than the currently available GKN/lobro CV's.

You may be able to buy new old stock origonal Porsche Lobro CV joints from before GKN bought Lobro (much darker grey steel with Porsche emblem and part numbers on them and tighter tolerances) from the dealer but they are about 4x the cost.

Thanks for your responses.
I already have both axles out and clean. The outter cv joint can't be removed so I cleaned it then the best I could. I have not seen critical wear damage in any of the four CV's but one of the wheel side ones is very difficult to move so I might end up replacing that axle.
I will post progress latter...........R
