Turbo conversion, what is needed?
I have a 3.0 Euro Carrera. Engine code 930-02. CIS-injection. The compression ratio is 8.5:1.
I am thinking about turbocharging. What is needed? One option is going with digital WUR, adjusting the timing, and slapping on a turbo. But not sure how reliable it will be? I am not looking for a max-hp engine. In stock form it has 200hp, and I would be more than satisfied with anything over 250hp. Another option is to install the Bitz EFI kit, and EDIS igntion. That would be much more expensive, but give me full controll on the timing etc. Is it needed, or only needed if I am building a 300hp engine? All input is appreciated. Where can I get hold of oil supply- and return lines/tubes? Which turbo would be suited if I want low boost threshold and good power in the low and midrange, rather than all out top end power? |
There are many threads here on the subject. Just use your search feature. There are a few guys that have the parts you need...
good luck, Ben |
You can find someone here that is doing a efi conversion, they will have most of the original pcs you need to turbocharge your engine. CIS injection is fine for that amount of HP.
|
I prefer to use as much stock equipment as possible for minimal difficulty turbo conversions. The 930 CIS, 930 J-pipe, oil lines, etc. Study the 930 layout and compare it to the SC, you will see many shared parts.

save the 930/02
Hi
funny... I have got a 1976 Carrera 3.0 with the original 930/02 engine. I am also considering (seriously) going down the boost slope. I have got: a 930 CIS, complete. Tbitz EFI kit plus some extras BAE bonnets from a BAE kit. didn't mean to hijack your thread. One of the reasons that I haven't jumped on it yet is the fact that I have got a 930/02 engine. These things are getting somewhat expensive. This is why I would recommend bying a 78 or 79 engine from an SC. Or maybe simply buy an early 930. A 3.2 SS like Mb911 has got sounds like a nice build Best of luck Jesper |
Or just pick up a used 930 engine and stuff it in. Can probably get a decent one for under $10K in todays economic turndown.
|
if you use a J and S knock system, compression wont be an issue either.
|
No problem with the hijack, Jesper. :)
Me, I live in Norway. 930's are very scarce around here. And the shipping costs to get a 930 engine from the US to Norway is prohibitively expensive. Since my car is originally a 1972 911T, which has been converted to a 3.0 Euro Carrera, the value of the car itself is pretty low. If I could buy a 930-engine and recoup most of the costs by selling my 930-02, I would. Hmm. |
I know there are several threads about converting, but I am wondering what excactly is needed in terms of fueling and ignition. To keep things simple, it is tempting to just get a D-WUR for the fuel. What is an easy fix for the ignition-timing? Some sort of bolt on boost-retard function? Or will perhaps a stock 930 distributor fit my engine, and thus work well?
Or, is there perhaps no need to do much to the ignition other than reduce maximum advance, if I keep boost levels and ensure good intercooling? |
Have you considered using a supercharger? That would supply the low to mid range power and torque you are looking for , plus the added benefit of zero lag wich these motors are known for. I have vehicles with both kinds of power adders ( turbo , supercharged ) and let me tell you the supercharged wins hands down. You have maximum torque available at 2000 rpm versus 5000 and instant power. But on the other hand I love my 930 power delivery , you have to DRIVE the car to get the benefits but worth it. It just depends on what you want the car to do. Plus turboing is probably easier to do . Im sure if you do a search on this site you will find someone who has added a supercharger and how they did it. Just my 2 cents......Ben

Supercharging will also solve your oil supply and return line delima as they are not needed. :D

Boost is very addictive. No matter how much you start with, you will want more.

I think I'll go with turbo. It's easier, because I have dealt with turbos before. But, what turbo is suited, when I want fast spool-up, little backpressure to keep temps down, and I don't need more than maximum 300hp out of that turbo (I'll settle with 250hp first, but I may want a bit more as time goes by)

GT30R like I have is great, very quick spool. |
What A/R would be correct on the GT30R to be used on the 930?
The problem with this turbo is that it is expensive, and probably near impossible to find used. |
I have .82 works well...
I have heard of people using the older T03s with success. I like how the GT series require a relatively low oil amount of oil flow so supply and return isn't an issue where it can be using other units. |
You mentioned on boost timming retard. MSD makes a set up that pulls back timming with boost that should alow you to keep you off boost advance for better cruse. I think it is adjustable from 1-3 deg of retard with each lb of boost or somthing.

Hi
Depending on which route you take. I might have some of the parts you need. I bought them for the same reason as what you are doing now, but I am behind on things to do... Let me know. Where in Norway do you live? I have been to Norway A LOT :-) Jesper |
