Greetings: Mark
Yes- My problems went away. I currently have MSD6AL & Master blaster coil & magnecor wires. I was just fed up and going wacky with this intermittent miss on top end and just cruising at 2500rpm.... I read somewhere on the fourms to go .028 gap or .030..etc.. I just want to car to run right. I went with stock gap and to keep my fingers crossed...Its a pain in the ass just to change these plugs without losing it... I went with a colder plug which i believe made the difference....A big difference. For now...I AM VERY VERY HAPPY....I don't want to touch anything if I don't have to. I am going to try take some pics of the plugs and post it for review. |
I agree with Mark H.; the smaller gap probably made the difference, not the heat range. I don't know the energy output of the OEM CDI, but I wouldn't stray too far from OEM plug gap specs.
On many occasions, when I've increased plug gaps using a non-high performance ignition, I've lost gobs of torque to gain high rpm power. Only do it if you've got the hi perf control module and hi perf coil to handle it. |
The funny thing is that when i put in the orig ngks what i listed, it worked well for awhile, then it was getting worse and worse... Probably it was spark gap..to big .040. I was looking at sparkplug web-sites looking at various pics of plugs and comparing them to mine...INMOP it looked as if my plugs were a little hot...
Maybe my next change will put the gap at .030 with another brand.. But for now, Denso-w24 made my day off from work, an enjoyable one. :) |
Per MSD:
Compression--Spark Plug Gap Up to 10.5 -- .050 to .060 10.5 to 13 -- .040 to .050 over 13/1 -- .035 to -.045 They note to open gapes in .005 increments and test untill best performance is obtained. 7/1CR with 1 bar is about equal to 11/1 effective compression. I know your system is stock but this is an interesting example of what can be done with spark plug gaps. |
PS, if you are still having on boost issues it might be worth trying the stock .8 bar boost spring.
That added power one feels on a nice cool day requires extra fuel to support it. |
Hey Man...I had a similar problem with my 89 turbo. I did all the standard cures...sparks,wires,cap...etc. Checked div valve...it was leaking...replaced it with a billet unit. Checked the WUR, it was not heating up...replaced it. Checked IC and all the lines. Adjusted CO...on and on until total frustration set in. On a whim checked my relays in the front bonnet... The relay to fuel pump II had worked it's way out. Resulting in causing my engine to run rich...and bog under boost. Plugged it back in and VIOLA! Problem solved! Hope this helps.

Just an idea but it would be interesting to open the gap to 0.04 to see if the new plugs are still better at the same gap as the old ones or if it's the gap that has improved your ride.
I too have installed an MSD 6AL and have gapped to 0.04 and am wondering if closing the gap would gain any benefits in driveability or if I should try a new plug. What would happen long term running an MSD spark through a stock gap? |
The next thing i would like to do is some 6o-130mph times or just run witha zo6. : :)
Just realized my GAP SIZE .028 on the Denso plugs...........My BAD...... |
