anyone have a 996 tt?

Hey guys, I had a 930 two summers ago with all the regular bolt ons for about 400whp. I sold it and had a Viper GTS for a year, now I really liked the looks of the Viper and prefer the reliability of a newer car but it was not as fun to drive as the 930. So now the Viper is up for sale and I am looking back at Porsches, I test drove a 996 tt and loved driving it although I don't care for the looks much. I have also been looking at 965's but haven't been able to drive one yet, it is less likely I would get one of these because it will be harder to find the right car, when searching for a 930 it took me half a year to find one i wanted! I always hear that guys that switch from the 930 to a 996 don't like them though? I have done a short test drive but other then being too quite I liked it. What do you guys think of these cars?

Drop David Goodman a PM (that's his screen name), he's got two 930's and a fairly new 996 turbo.. he's won his class in the one lap of America so can speak with knowledge on the driving differences

I remember your 930...such a sweet color. The 996 turbos sure are tempting these days from a price perspective, but I agree with you that the look isn't so great.

I had an opportunity to drive one a couple years ago and was impressed with the speed, but it would not replace the 930 for me. I'd like one as a winter beater maybe

The 996 is just so refined compared to the 930, its just sort of boring to me. I drove a friend's 993 turbo and I have the same complaint. For a daily driver, either would be much easier to live with, but as a weekend toy I think the 930 experience is hard to beat.

You may be on to something with the 965. They are supposed to be a bit more modern feeling than the 930. I'd like to drive one of those to see if they manage to retain enough rawness to scratch the itch.

I rode in a 996 turbo with my instructor at Sebring. It was very fast and he was shifting gears with his thumb on the triptronic buttons on the steering wheel. Too quiet though and no backfiring and flames shooting out going into the corners, where is the fun in that?

965s are kinda boring as it is too civilized. I believe mine is probably headed to Florida in a week or so to its new owner. The 996 is rather numb and even more boring than the 965. The 930 is where it is at!

I currently have both...but mostly because I'm older and my knees are getting bad, which makes the clutch a bit difficult on occasion.... I prefer driving the 996TT...basically because it's a bit more "civilized"....however I do enjoy dropping the top on the 930 and running the mountain roads around here when the weather is nice. I guess my answer is tempered with the fact that since the 930 is a factory slant cabriolet, that adds to the pleasure and difference between the two.

Yeah, I remember your car too.. that was kinda schweet!

Not sure what you budget is but if want a 996TT that's a bit more ballsey then you may want to check-out an 02 GT2. They're pretty rare, low production.. and they're still kinda pricey.

I'm not big on the newer cars but I've driven a couple of GT2's and they got my attention!

I had this humiliating experience last month when I was driving my 930 and was doing 130 mph uphill when a 996 twin turbo past by me as if my car was standing still. But one thing though I noticed is the rear of the 996 is not as sexy as compared to the 930.

996TT's are very well supported on Rennlist. Would a GT3 be too slow for you? I don't recall if your a hp junkie or just like a little adrenalin. May not be much faster around the track than a well dialed Viper, but much more tossable and refined. I say this owning several muscle cars so its not meant as any disrespect to the Viper. I'd love a GTS if I ever stop buying Pcar parts.

Yea That was a stunning color I saved some pictures also. I would love to have a 930 in that color.

I think you will find the 930 experience is hard to exceed. They are expensive maintenance hogs however you can still work on them. The 993tt doesn't assault your senses like the 930. Never driven a viper always curious about that car though.

To me if you like the original air cooled 911/930 style than nothing else will do, especially newer and more 'refined' versions. If I had a new Porsche, I would tear it apart to make it light weight and loud so what is the point. And yes I love the new GT3s and GT2s but that is a different level of car.

For a daily driver, than yeah any Porsche would be more than adequate.

Bryan, you are making a 965 out to be a Maybach.
I can't hear my radio in mine. I can roll over a dime and tell you if it's heads or tails.
Having functional a/c makes the car more usable but that's about it.
965s are seriously fast. Fast is not boring, IMO.
I wouldn't call any single-turbo 911 "civilized"

I agree with Paul, by no means is my 964 turbo civilized......

Of course mine isn't stock, but neither is a 400 hp 930...

I guess I like my 930 much better since I prefer a non-hydraulic clutch and manual steering. What I do find funny is guys say a 930 turbo is raw compared to a 964 turbo, a 964 turbo is raw compared to a 993 turbo, and a 993 turbo is raw compared to a 996 turbo. I'm an old school guy so I like the rawest of the raw.

Thanks, I wish I would have kept that car now! Can't afford a GT2 although I would love to have one. The viper was nice for 2-3 car cruises and it is a quick car but just doesn't "feel" fast like the 930 did so it is boring to drive up in the mountains in comparison. I do like the a/c though, I spent a ton of money on a/c upgrades on my 930 and it still was sub par. That was my major complaint with that car.

I say if you want the raw feel of the 930, but want some civilities like A/C, ABS, then buy a 965. If you don't want a CIS car, then get a 993TT and so on.

I without a doubt would love to own a 996TT as a daily driver, or more driver friendly car. However, I do love the feel and smell of my 930.

I drive my 964T to Denver when the weather is nice out, if you'd like to see it, or take it for a drive, just let me know.

I have both and love them both. I am still amazed with the 930, so far ahead of its time when it was built. It handles great and is much more fun to drive when I am alone. It is loud smelly and raw. My 996TT is super fast, handles great, and is the most reliable car I have ever owned. It is quite and comfortable and I can talk on the phone and hear people. I drive my 930T to work and when I am driving alone. I drive my 996TT with my wife or when I feel like I need to relax. My 930T can be a handful at times.
