Question on 964 Turbo Internal Model #
 

I see a lot of people call the 964 Turbo a "965", why is that? From what I've read, the 965 was the internal code for the 969, which was to be the successor to the 930, but was scrapped.

In 1990 Porsche introduced a Turbo version of the 964 series. This car is sometimes mistakenly called 965 (this type number actually referred to a stillborn project that would have been a hi-tech turbocharged car in the vein of the 959). For the 1991 and 1992 model years, Porsche produced the 964 Turbo with the 930's proven 3.3L engine, improved to produce 320hp. 1993 brought the Carrera 2/4's 3.6L engine, now in turbo-charged form and sending a staggering 360hp to the rear wheels. With the 993 on the way, this car was produced through 1994 and remains rather rare.

Where is this statement from? It is inaccurate also. The 964 turbo 3.6 was rated at 360 BHP not RWHP. It was also imported as a US spec car for MY 1994 only with a total of 466 delivered including all of the turbo S's and the cars used for the racing programs.

Although technically the 964 turbo was never referenced as a 965 by the factory the use of 965 in reference to the 964 turbo has been used synonymously with the cars since early on. Originally called the C2 turbo by many it later became known as the 965 since most supply houses used the numbers associated with most parts for the car which begin with 965 instead of 964 for the N/A counterparts. So technically it is not accurate to call it a 965 however, since no model was released as a 965 it has become known as a 965 along with 964 turbo and C2 turbo all of which are commonly accepted.

If yo go to most web sites of Porsche parts suppliers you will find that a fair number of them have a listing for 964/965 with the intent of leading you to a link for 964 turbo parts.

Also FYI the reasoning behind why many parts start with 965 was because when they canned the 969 many parts were carried over into the 964 turbo production saving the factory from serious losses associated with the program.

I called my old C2T a 965 because any part # that started with 965 was 5 times more expensive than the similar part for a 964. Made me feel better since it reminded me what car i was buying it for. LOL
