930 engine swaps ... how hard is it to install a newer, higher HP engine? ....

.... in the 930 chassis? Do the newer turbo engines bolt up transmission wise and mount wise, or is there a lot of fab work needed? Any engine swap kits?

..Ask JBL930 (aka 'JBL9930')

964 motor in mine...adjust the engine mounts forward 1.5" and my stuff bolted up with changes to the oiling system.

Look at about $9k for fitting the engine tins and doing it right not including the motor.

What's the reasoning behind a newer and maybe higher HP engine? You can get 400 RWHP out of a 3.3 CIS motor and more out of a EFI 3.3 motor. Seems that you would be adding to the cost of a good build.

Thoughts?

JBL930 01-25-2010 04:57 PM

I guess the only reason to do it would be if you came across an already built, high HP motor, and it would cost more to build your 930 engine to the same spec?
In my case my engine was blown, and i'd already thrown a fortune at it. I wanted twin turbo's, great EFI control, and plenty of easy tuning options... A 993 turbo engine fitted the bill, it was a mission to fit though, even fitting anything other than a 993 turbo box to it poses problems... It was worth it though!
A 964 chassis is much easier to work with!

In a perfect world you'd buy a spare 930 engine, have it built to whatever spec you want, whilst still having your car to go and enjoy. Then fit your newly built monster motor when it's ready :)

Buy a later car and put the change in the bank. For what I have into my car I could seriously have bought a GT3RS with the reciepts to show and I recently suffered a broken valve, no contact just a failed exhaust valve.

A930Rocket 01-25-2010 08:17 PM

Ouch! Sorry to hear that.

I hear ya on the cost. I must have $65k in mine with me doing all the work. Of course it was aover a period of years and easier to justify.

Ouch Lincoln, sorry to hear that. These cars are a love affair though right, you don't count the cost of all the holidays, meals and prezzies you buy for your wife/girlfriend, it just gets spent and forgotten.. I'm not going to go through my bill folder, i just open it and put the next bill on the pile and then close it.

Maxx, it all depends on what you want from your car, what engine did you have in mind?

SCHNELE 01-26-2010 06:05 AM

The carnage was unreal...

JBL930 01-26-2010 06:18 AM

What's your plan Lincoln, rebuild bigger and better, or just get it back together?
I'm so glad i did a leak down on mine before i took it to VMax, major leak on one exhaust valve, and when it was stripped all of the exhaust valve guides were shot, i guess if the valves are bouncing around in a loose guide they will be more prone to break. Do you know what caused your one to let go?

copbait73 01-26-2010 07:05 AM

Sorry to hear of your engine failure.

I the early 70s I worked my way through school rebuilding air-cooled VW engines. Most failed from #3 exhaust valve failure. As you say the carnage is unbelievable. Usually a total long block and in the case of the turbo motor, often the turbo also.

Typically exhaust valves that fail in good engines do so from excessive CHT.

Look at what the factory did to control this situation, they limited the HP on air-cooled street motors. For racing band aids were applied like flat fans. At the extreme, high power density means very short life spans of critical components.

There may not be limits to your bank account but there are limits within the architecture of the machine.

SCHNELE 01-26-2010 09:02 AM

Well the guides were in good shape this valve broke at the base of the valve. The Long block is intact but I need a new set of pistons & cylinders and of course all new valves intake and exhaust. The car is wicked fast, with gobs of torque so reliability is the main goal at this point.

Was your valve lift and valve train radical?

SCHNELE 01-26-2010 02:35 PM

Not really running the typical cams for this sort of build, GT2 Evo cams, matching rockers, titanium performance development retainers etc, I just had a bad valve.

copbait73 01-26-2010 04:19 PM

Yes, that can happen also. Parts quality isn't what it used to be.

You were fortunate that valve head didn't destroy the piston then dig around in the crank, rods, and case. Did the stub get shoved back into the combustion chamber?

Yeah but older cars are heaps of fun and very satisfying

:)

JBL930-

Any photos or advice on the engine upgrade?

Friend w an 88 and a bad motor is asking/thinking of doing the same thing.

Len

:)

JBL930 02-24-2010 07:14 AM

Hi Len

I've gone into as much detail as i can on THIS thread, most of the info is there, if there is anything else you would like to know just ask, either on my thread or this one
