The 965 Project and the 965 designation, totally trivial...

So I got into an argument about the 965 designation, according to whoever wrote this in wikipedia:

"In 1990 Porsche introduced a Turbo version of the 964 series. This car is sometimes mistakenly called 965 (this type number actually referred to a stillborn project that would have been a hi-tech turbocharged car in the vein of the 959)."

I've seen this quoted on many forums etc, anyway the fact still exists there are many 965 part numbers, so 965 xxx xxx etc. Which one would think Porsche did use this internal designation.

The argument to this is some of the parts from the stillborn for the 'hi-tech turbocharged' 965 project were carried over and used on the car.

My question is if this was the case, why is there a 965 WUR, would they not have dropped CIS for a high tech version of the car? Do a pelican parts search for 965 part numbers, it covers a lot from carpet to ignition cables...

This is a totally trivial waste of time, I find it interesting non the less....

965 was the internal designation for the 969 successor to the Turbo (930) that was to have been more mainstream but still using some of the 4WD and turbo technology from the 959 supercar. Similar to a 996 Turbo but 20 years earlier. The project was abandoned due to costs and what we got was the 964 Turbo.

The 964 project was the successor to the 911 Carrera. The 965 was to be the new "Turbo" and fill that up-market range.

Spence, mate, you were having the YouTube 'argument' with me! ;O)

I used to refer to them as '965s' (in the same way I use to refer to 'KKK-3LDZ' turbos as KKK-K26s), until somebody corrected me and pointed me to something like a Paul Frere book or something. (Can't remember which one, I've read so many books.)

lol!! I love Youtube arguments, everyone is so firey, kills a lot of time at work when bored!

I have actually heard of what Flieger was talking about with the 969 too but it really never made sense to me. I still find it hard to believe, they make a prototype car, scrap it but it's designation ends up on production parts like carpet pieces! search 965 in the parts section... And thanks Flieger!

Anyway I stand happily corrected!

I understood that Porsche didn't make a Turbo for the 1990 production year and started production in aug. of 90 for the 91 production year.

This is bugging me so much and I have no idea why, must have way too much time on my hands. I even posted a response to Phil Raby on the Total 911 site.
