cam sprocket alignment question
 

I am putting the cams back in and have a question about alignment as outlined in the book. Please check my math.

I have an early case (79) so I am using the early case measurement for the intermediate shaft. Mine measures out to 2.043".

For the left sprocket measurement I get 1.110" and the book says to subtract 54.8mm (2.157") which equals -1.047.

It says these are supposed to be equal but this is an inch off so what am I doing wrong? Yes I subtracted out the straight edge thickness.

I had the same issue...there is a typo in the book. Where it says to subtract, you have to add.

I just did this last weekend. Take a look at Figure 6-9 on page 159. Make sure you are going down the access hole to measure from the front flange to the intermediate shaft gear face.

First measure the thickness of your strait edge, write this down.

Next measure the distance from the front flange to the intermediate shaft gear face (down the hole) and write this down.

Add the thickness of the strait edge to the flange to intermediate shaft front gear measurement. This is now your reference measurement!

Now you have the desired measurement of the right side gear face (should be very close to your reference measurement). The right side should line up with the intermediate shaft gear face within .25mm

Now measure the left side. Write this down than subtract 54.8mm from this measurement. It should be within .25mm of your intermediate shaft measurement.

I was making a rookie mistake. I was measuring the intermediate shaft correctly but not the cam sprocket. I was measuring from the chain case to the sprocket and not from the rear most face of the case to the sprocket.
I looked at a drawing of this being done on the internet and that's what clued me in. The drawing was from Wayne's other book.

Glad to hear you have it all worked out. I think I will set up my video camera in my garage and make a few youtube video's on my build. It's a shame the case is already fully assembled or I would have documented that as well.
