Joining the turbo club

Joining the turbo club with the Green Machine.....

Just purchased a hot rod 3.0 turbo motor with EFI, twin plug and all the goodies....... Over 400 at the wheels......Likely will run low boost and a bit lower power as it is going in a 2100 pound race car....

just need to decide if I am going to keep the 3.4 twin plug, ITB, EFI NA motor that I built...... Both can run off the same ecu and coil packs...

Can't wait until it gets here and I can start the install!

Good question! I have a 915 in the car, factory lsd, Wevo side cover with 930 bearing that I am plumbing for cooling. But, not sure that will cut it. I have access to a 930 box, but am not a fan of the 4 speed for a track car.... and also can source a G50, but honestly I am not a big fan of the G50, I do prefer a well set up 915.... but alas, that may not cut it........

I was actually hoping to pick Brian's brain via email about his 915 set up....

Use the 915. If it prooves to weak, well... cross that bridge when you come to it. It sounds like you have done quite a bit of strengthening to it.

Well, the whole car was set up around the NA motor it has in it now, just over 300hp. The car goes like mad now on the track so it should be fun with the new motor.

I am leaning toward using the 915 until it no longer works.

How about a motor picture?

That 915 might seem pretty short geared with a good turbo motor on a race car.

I am sure you know the bassics.

Mabye Brian could trade you some wheels for his turbo headers / turbo so you could turn you 3.4 into a ITB, twin plug, monster.

Jeff,

Just a thought, you might spend some time talking to a couple of good clutch builder's if you are going to try the 915.

Porsche supposedly did a couple of things when it upgraded the normal 944turbo to a Turbo S. They heat treated the first several gears.

But what I find interesting and potentially useful is they also went to the effort to design a special clutch disk with a think had a double spring pack to help sooth the torque's impacts / pounding effect.

Race motor and transmission mounts might help to. I am thinking we do not want the clutch springs or mounts to potentially contribute to a slide hammer effect.

Some form of active boost control in at least first and second might help to.

Just a data point to consider. There was a guy here that was talking up his fancy turbo / 915 build with supposedly a special chrome molly main shaft, stronger gears, and other goodies that when into his 2300 lb 935 look on a built high boost CIS 930 motor. It was not much later that he broke his special 915.

Still, I hope it will work.

Would be cool if you could keep you duck tail?

Boy I don't know how long the 915 can handle 400WHP on the track, it is stressed enough on the street. For certain you will need a robust tranny cooling system. I use a Sachs Sport clutch and have been happy with the same unit for 10 years.
You don't say what turbo is on it but you would be well served to have a smooth progressive threshold rather than the on/off switch of say a K27-7006.

The Green meanie has come a long way and now this huh? It should be a blast, enjoy the ride!!

Oh, I've got to ping you in the near future regarding some wheel backspacing and and ECU mapping.. I have one build that's creeping along but should be very similar to your 3.4 .. or maybe I should just buy yours? :-)

Well, I am planning on running it at lower boost and around 400 at the flywheel inititially. I am not worried about first gear as it will only be used at pit out. But I am concerned about the transmission..... I will post some pics of it when it gets here, should be a couple of weeks.

The turbo is a Garrett Gt30R.

Well you ask a good a question. I think on a short and tight track I am not going to pick up much time, but gearing will play a role there as well. But on a longer track I think there will be a significant difference.

To be honest, I just really wanted to try the turbo route. I love my 3.4 as it has un real throttle response and that makes it very easy to drive. But the turbo has EFI as well and should have reasonable response.

What about a 930 transmission with a shorter 2/3/4 gear stack? I was looking at the tracks I drive regularily and I really don't need more than 140-145 on the big track and about 130-135 on the short one.
