'79 930 Shifter Rebuild

I need some help and advice on a shifter rebuild. My Haynes manual says both front seats must be removed and then clear access to the tunnel cover and remove that as well.

Can the shifter be rebuilt without doing this? What special tools or techniques are required? I've read that this is a very simple procedure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Seats weren't in my way when I did all that and I liked having them to lean on... made it alot easier on the back.

Keep the seat. No special tools needed.

Got any questions while doing it, post them here with pix.
