Road trip in a 930

I'm planning a long drive in a 930 in July. Going from Northern Idaho to Southern California . . . about 1200 miles. Hoping to do it over three days, so I won't be in any hurry. I'd like to know what are the recommended 'spares' to carry with me . . . just in case. The car is in great condition, but has never been on a long drive like this over several days.

I should also add this is a 1978 930 and it is factory original stock with low miles.

Are there any known electrical issues?

Any mechanical issues that I should prepare for?

Thanks for all feedback.

I have one of those 78-930s, since long time ago... no surprises at 90K on the odo. Crank it up and GO. For a 1K miles trip I would check belts, tires, brakes... nothing special.

My 87' has a space saver spare. If your 78' has one, too, you may want to blow it up beforehand to make sure it works. Also, make sure your electric air pump and cigarette lighter works. If your ride is lowered, make sure the inside tread of the rear tires is good. Make sure you have tools that fit the lugnuts and fan nut (bring an extra fan belt, too). You should have no problems but just cover the rudimentary bases.

A valid AAA Membership Card... I never leave home without it!

I got AAA because of this car... I use my couple "free" towes a year to have my car brought to and from the mechanic so I don't have to arrange a ride...

I recently took mine from Florida to New Mexico in 3 days. I took along an extra belt, 2 fuel pump relays, fuses, a can of fix a flat and a flashlight.... I was more worried about it sitting in hotel parking lot than any mechanical issues arising. LOL.. oh and a camera to post pictures of your 930 in different locations...

Very Timely Post

I'm soon to embark on a similar journy to bring my '88 from Chicago where its been for the last year out to the San Francisco Bay Area. Part of me would take a lot of solace in loading it on a trailer and waiting for it on my couch. The other part of me knows that I'll likely never have another excuse to make such a roadtrip in such a car.

I drove mine from Chas SC to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and back last summer, 3200 miles in one week. Drove it to DC last Week, and now I am in Raleigh NC. For two yrs I was driving it from Chas to Jax FL and back once a month. Been to Nashville 3 times in it also. Bought it 4yrs ago with 34K, just turned 97K on this trip to Raleigh. I carry the following: Fuses, FP relays (Red and Black) Spare CD, Fan Belt, Coil, rear FP (only because I had one as a spare), a few tools, two air pumps and tire plug kit. Driving it back up to DC next week. Hope to turn 100K this month. Oh, and I also have AAA.

The car has only failed me one time, I was on my way to FL a couple yrs ago, and stopped for gas one block form my house, and while pumping gas the engine just died. A failed CD unit. I bought a rebuilt CD, and fixed my old one, so now it's a spare.

Now, after having said all of this, the car will break down on my way home tomorrow!

Just Drive it!
