fitting wider tyres to standard rims

Hi, I have a UK 930 3.3 with 8" rear rims wearing 245/45/16. I believe the factory size is 225/50/16. What's the effect of fitting wider than standard tyres? I always thought the sidewall rolled more. I want the best handling whilst keeping to standard fitments or doesn't it matter? Tread is low so I'm due to change anyway so I have to make a decision to go with standard or not. Any experiences? Regards Stuart

The more the sidewall is straight up and down or even a hair towards the center, the better it will handle. Too wide of a tire will allow the wheel to move in and out on the sidewall.

That's about what I know....

Wider rims stiffen up the side wall.

245's work pretty well on an 8" and a lot of 911 racer's run them like that.

Thumbs up

Thanks for your advice guys. I think I'll opt for better handling with the standard fit. Thanks again

Lets put it this way. A 245 on an 8" will probably outperform a 225 in most cases. Most race classes that are limited as to rim width usually run the wider of all tire choices if they fit.

However there are other variables like alignment and tire construction that can have an impact.

Tire construction is probably a bigger variable. A sticky 225 like a Toyo RA1 is going to out perform a 300 tread ware rating tire significantly even if it is wider.

I really liked the Dunlop Z1 Star Spec's but they only come in 205/225.
