Help! ID ignition system

I've owned an 87 930 for about 3 years now and it's been great. Recently however, I have an ignition problem. The problem is that apparently the ignition system was modified on the car sometime in the early 90s and the mechanic is unable to identify what type of ingition (from what other make/model) is on the car. He believes its a GM system. Was there a typical ignition system that was added to the 930? Any help would be appreciated.

If it's not stock, then the two substitutes have been MSD and Perma-Tune. MSD has been used on lots of cars, but foreign and domestic.
